@@dergeier117 I don’t know who’s who yet in “1776.” FYI, a few years ago, B.C. (Before Covid), one of the FNC “Legends & Lies” series played, focusing on the Founding Fathers. Each episode focused on a particular Founding Father. And the actors appeared in other episodes in the role of their Founding Father. I really liked the actor who played John Adams. Later, I found out this actor had great esteem for John Adams and had played him in maybe four different productions. I read a short piece he wrote about his experience on the FNC series, as well as in “1776,” in which he played… John Adams! So he had to have been a great singer as well. If I recall, he said that at the FNC audition, they were pretty much considering any of the actors for any of the Founding Father roles. During his audition, they wanted him to read some lines, which he did. On the spur of the moment, he asked if he could present one of John Adams speeches. He recited it passionately and from memory-and got the role of John Adams on the spot.

It's theatre, the founding fathers didn't break out in song so you're obviously not here for accuracy. The ethnicity or color of the actor is irrelevant when there's a bigger story to tell. Also the Hamilton in the musical isn't usually played by a black man anyway.

@@jaydenps2759 You mentioned standards. You should take into account when it was made. Tastes change through time. 1776 won a Tony for best musical in 1969 so it was up to the standards of that time. Any musical that celebrates and informs about our founding is alright by me. I love this play and film. It was produced using the music of the day, just as Hamilton was. They were generated to reach the audiences of the day. No need to make sweeping statements about which is better musically, that's completely subjective. Though you could gripe about accuracy.
@rayarroyo7
@rayarroyo7 5 жыл бұрын
come on, you really think the audience of the day preferred opera esque musicals? Don't be dense. 1776 reflected what wealthy show watchers wanted and were designed with that audience in mind. Hamilton on the other hand was designed for a more wide reaching audience. Ironically enough the very urban population that Hamilton targets can't afford to see Hamilton.

Many comments are debating whether Hamilton is better than 1776 or viceversa. Personally, I prefer Hamilton, because I prefer it's type of music, and I'd definitely give 1776 a few more chances to listen to, but all of this is my unpopular opinion. But honestly, this comment section is about this song, not about The Adams Administration, so the references are quite unnecessary. Some people here would like to read about this musical, not one that was inspired by this wonderful creation. Well, I can assure that most people here are here to enjoy the song, so focus your minds on 1776, and not Hamilton.

Amen to the person who wrote that 1776 made the way for Hamilton. Absolutely right! You may think it's corny, but you need to take into account the time period in which it was made. I can't say I knew the Founding Fathers or their personal beliefs, but from every record I have read this movie captures them well: they were patriots who were ready to die for the cause they believed in so dearly-but they were also a bunch of stubborn, arrogant, grouchy, alcoholic, womanizing old men who could barely stand each other. John Adams was both one of the most admired and most detested men in the entire country at that time.
