I’m literally a 26 year old guy who’s been a firefighter/EMT for the past 4 years. I just made the decision to go back to the army to get into helicopter pilot school…with the aspiration to fly EMS civilian side. Welp, that’s it. The universe has spoken. I’m going.

I wish someone like you was around 35 years ago. My dream was to be an EMS helicopter pilot. My son was born at a University hospital and I watched the helicopter fly in and out. I told my wife, thats what I want to do. She was very supportive but we did not have the money so I mowed yards to get enough money to take flight lessons. I took fixed wing lessons because it was cheaper and I thought after I got a private licence it would be cheaper to get an upgrade to rotor. Little did I know My instructor was using my hours to get his commercial license hours built up. ( your welcome Marty) anyway I mowed yards, cut and sold wood, finally started a second carreer of school bus driving and finally got so discouraged because of my instructor I gave up after my solo and before my cross countries. I worked in fiefighting and first response EMS but never fullfilled the dream of flying helicopters, I still look to the sky everytime I hear the unmistakable sound of choppers in the air. Keep up the good work!!

I'm numb and have pain but shit unless there's a doctor sitting on top of me, I am ready to find grants, loans and whatever I have to. I stopped after 9-11 because I was wrong about the state of the industry. I thought I would never see any flying job higher than a flight instructor as long as there was plenty of ex/current-military pilots to hire. I can walk, think and see. And fly.

Do helicopters pilots ever have a conflict or an argument(s) with the medical staff? And if so what is the out comes?
@jimmcneill38315 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! How it’s handled depends on the company, and is one of the major things you should ask before signing on. My first company said pilots were only bus drivers and had to defer to the medical staff. I didn’t stay long there. Others treated everybody as team with specific areas of responsibility, which is the way it should be done.
@HelicopterGround5 жыл бұрын
Great question. Best way I can describe it is this: When going through initial training for the EMS company that I worked for, made it very clear. They stated, "do not get in an argument with the medical crew. It does not matter who is right or wrong. We are providing a service to the hospital. You as the pilot will either be moved, or your employment terminated, regardless."

Most helicopter EMS companies require 2000 hours of flight time to be considered for hire. Biggest thing is building those flight time hours in a helicopter.
@DANCINGERN4 жыл бұрын
It would be nice and educational if you would divulge the cost of training. I am 74 yrs old, malem, married ,Private License in 1967, multiengine rating shortly after that with 240 hrs fixed wing, 20 hrs copilot time twin beech super 18. Have a dialated aorta from a blood vein to a grape fruit in size. Size 4.9 on medical scale, safe for now. Had a heart valve replacement, followed by additional 5 surgeries . Unknown heart attack with virus symtons in stomak, left chest, and upper left jaw. 2 days later in the ER, i was informed in had a heart attack without knowing it. It should take 20 hrs to transition into a copter. Last flown pic1996. Would have to consult with a aviation medical examiner. How much would it cost to be a commmerical helicopter. Do you have computer programs like micro soft 2003 or similar to use on computer??
@HelicopterGround4 жыл бұрын
Cost of training varies depending on the helicopter flown. Typically in todays market you will see prices around $500-$600+ per hour with an instructor. Our prigram is completely online www.helicopterground.com and can be viewed on any device.

Part 61 you typically just do home study and whatever ground training uour instructor gives you. Part 141 are schools with curriculum provided along with testing.
