Gummy eyes sounds like pinkeye. Funny thing is,if pinkeye is viral it resolves itself, so people could have gotten the idea that the salve worked if the symptoms went away while using it.

Hand washing didnt become a thing until after the 1850s, although Islamic and Spanish doctors were doing it in the 18th Cent. They hadnt developed germ theory, but just used observation to tell them it helped, and then tried to theorize from that.

Does anyone have that Latin phrase typed out? It sounded like "exit omnibi mangus Apollo". I'm sure "mangus" is supposed to be "magnus", and it is similiar to "eris mihi magnus Apollo" ["you shall be my great Apollo' (Virgil) ]. It may have been misspelled or misquoted in the original, or in being "Englishicized". But if it is different, I'm curious!
