I saw Chicago Union Station in person for the first time last Spring when I boarded the Empire Builder and I was absolutely blown away by how big and impressive it is. Easily one of the best train stations on the continent, it's beautiful.

It really is. This was the first time I can remember seeing it late in the afternoon and lit like that. Grand Central gives it a run for its money, though!

I have a debilitating fear of heights and have trouble driving acrodd pa or to D.C. , are there any high overlooks on this route or high elevations?

There are a couple of tall bridges, one particularly in Harpers Ferry and a couple of small vistas but for most of the ride you're not too high above the ground. I would give Amtrak a call and see what they think as well.
