Michael Simone 💗 About creativity, that doesn’t only apply to the arts. As an engineer, you are probably naturally an intuitive and creative thinker, problem solver and idea creator. Also creativity is found in every area of life, like how we do our hair or dress, or set up our living space... I’m definitely an artist, but I’m also just a creative thinker, always asking why, or creating new ways to analyze the human condition and creating new possible solutions to stuff, etc. I hope this helped you 💕

I'm an INFP and I have a question about a hobby/job I have. First off I love doing woodwork although I have a great difficulty in that I feel I can only actually do any work on a project when the "inspiration" hits. Otherwise it just sits there gathering dust. And when I'm done I feel completely drained of all energy. I want to know if this is a normal experience or what? It's unrelated to the current video but halfway thru this I was wondering about it.

It’s a loaded question, but I’ve learned the context of the situation has implications to the direction of the question. General banter means a simple answer or an opportunity to share something interesting to start a conversation. In times where they press for me such as “no, I mean how you really feeling” then it means they’re probing for deeper. Sadly the ladder rarely happens, so most often it’s just a simple: “tell me how you’re feeling without me having to exhaust some mental stamina and space for you.” Obviously not a one size fits all explanation, but most of my experience has had this pattern occur.

The "empathy by mirroring" really got to me. It happens that most of the time outside my house they tell me that I'm very empathetic, but in my home I am often seen as selfish. Because of this I doubted really much for a long time about the empathy part and often doubted if I was really a good person and therefore being an INFP. The thing is that I just really can't understand my family's way of thinking and it's so hard to relate to them. Now that I see this I am shocked. I feel like I tend to be nicer to the people outside because I relate to them, because it's easier for me to connect with them. I don't know if it happens to you that is easier to be nice to some people than other, but wow, that explains things.
@GagePurple4 жыл бұрын
SAME! I don't have a lot to say to people in my family, its usually small talk and thats it. What am I supposed to say? I manage because I still want to be courteous to them and I love them but they don't give me much material to work with and their responses are pretty boring so its hard to even try sometimes and in the moment I don't have anything interesting in my head to say usually. At work and school I could express a lot more of myself, and especially when talking to some of my best friends I could pretty much fully be me and feel accepted and it feels really good to not feel bored being myself just because I am surrounded by people with boring things to say 😂but I seriously formed a couple of very deep connections with my friends and we help eachother through hard times and emotionally support eachother in such a mentally healthy way
@slvergle46974 жыл бұрын
This part got to me too!! There's been a voice in the back of my head for a long time making me wonder if I'm a good person or not. If I can relate to someone then emotion hits me like a bag of bricks (especially if it's something sad or upsetting). But if I hear someone talk about something sad/upsetting and I don't relate to it, I still feel for them but it doesn't have the same impact. Part of me as always thought that was selfish and bad. I'm not really sure how to explain that logic, though. I do find that it's usually easy to relate to people, though. Even if I haven't been in their situation, most of the time if I remember a time I felt that way, or ask myself how I would feel in that person's position, it does the trick
@FalconWindblader4 жыл бұрын
Family can REALLY be a pain in the ass to us at times, especially when they keep hounding us to interact with them more, or worse, be more like them. We don't have that much of such pressures outside, as we could just shut those that we don't click with out, yet we get called assholes if we were to do that to our families. We tend to be shut-ins when we get home anyway, & if we ain't allowed to do so, we'd just get more shut in instead.

I felt very shy and only talked to one of my other best friends for a lot of the time but soon opened up more the more comfortable I got and I seemed more extroverted when I got more comfortable and opened up more. That happens a lot.

"You don't mind being the center of attention as long as you've chosen it" this seems so simple, but yet it explains so much. I was really confused, because there's times where I absolutely love the attention, wanting to go on stages to perform whatever, or just being a person who calls attention. But at the same time, when I'm unwillingly put in the spotlight, I hate it, I get so insecure and nervous that I feel like crying. I never understood why, but now it makes so much sense.

I relate to a lot of these but I test as an INTP. I think one of the keys here is when he was talking about thinking all the time...I do think all the time, but I don’t really think about emotions that much unless someone inflicts next with them. Even when I have feelings I have to think about, I usually try to come up with reasons for them and solutions to them. I see them less as the truth, and more as things that have to be fixed.

Empathy described as mirroring instead of absorbing has been so comforting to me. I’ve found people describe empathy mostly as being able to just feel another persons emotions whenever they’re feeling it… which doesn’t always come very easily to me. It’s made me feel like I didn’t have empathy at all and felt very narcissistic. However, I feel profound connections and empathy to music, tv characters and other people when I can relate to their experiences. Thank you for this

Yeah I agree, you've got to keep going. I tell myself, just do a little bit every day and even if it's never going to be anything as good as I want it to be or of tremendous value to others, the journey is worth it because there's so much to be learnt. I always function best when I'm just allowing myself to enjoy it, taking the pressure completely off myself, rather than getting caught up in all the overwhelming details that are swirling around in my head about its worth, significance and all the things I want to include but can't process. We've got to forgive ourselves and allow ourselves to be ourselves.

I've gotten VERY reluctant with starting things for the past few years, due to being sorely aware that i probably ain't gonna be sticking with it for too long. Of all the 'ventures' i've started to hone since i was a kid, only 2 had ever been 'finished'.

I'm an INFP and I relate to everything you said. I think one of the hardest parts of being an INFP for me is making decisions. Ethical or philosophical ones, not everyday decisions (I'm fine with those). But moral decisions... there are so many facets and perspectives to consider and there's always new information. It's so hard! I think it can come across as wishy washy but I'm really not. I just hate having to pin down something that can be so fluid.
@AmyAndThePup4 жыл бұрын
I have the opposite problem. I know what I believe when it comes to faith, moral issues, and those things are far from fluid for me. But give me big things like career, wondering what I'm good at, and other such things, and I am quite literally paralyzed with indecision or uncertainty.

@haileylaine45844 жыл бұрын
uncovered loonatic I don’t think your type can really “change.” However things can change so much in your life, and you’re going to behave differently in different stages depending on stress, mental health, etc. So during some parts of your life you may feel like your behaving like a different type, but from what I’ve learned, I believe that your type is who you are at the core and that never changes even if your behavior and environment does.
@loony38224 жыл бұрын
@@haileylaine4584 I did a bit of research, and apparently the mtbi is not that consistent. It can change. But I guess that's because the test itself can't possibly get to know your 'core' personality. Sometimes you don't know it yourself. Lots of my misunderstandings stem from Fe not understanding Fi, and Fi users either unable to explain their thoughts or are unwilling to talk about it. I know that Fi users don’t want to label their feelings or can’t explain then well enough, but it’s very important that you verbalize to others why you feel the way you do. People aren’t mind readers. This is exactly what I’ve tried doing a few years ago, and needless to say, I’ve found a great set of friends who can understand me! And that’s despite half of them being high Fe users c: heck, the closest and dearest people to my heart are 2 ISFJs ❤️

As an older INFP I can relate to everything you said! I have been enthralled by math and science all my life with high aptitudes in both subjects. I even became an engineering student 5 years after working as a registered nurse. I returned to a career of critical care nursing because it was the only field that permanently captured my heart. I took up art at age 62 because I felt like I would never understand our Creator by using only the analytical aspects of my brain. I was shocked at how much creativity supported my every analytical thought, and how I had been blind to my own creativity because it had been too automatic. At first I was sure I couldn't be an INFP. They were just too weird. I couldn't understand them at all. Then I remembered how my closest friends fondly described me. I think we have a hard time recognizing ourselves because each of us varies so much within the framework of our cognitive functions. Perhaps the INFP foundation allows more variability than some of the other types?

K but, being bitchy is not an INFP thing. Neither is being insecure. Open communication just solves pretty much all the problems I keep seeing in INFP comment sections. Just work on open communication and emotional vulnerability one step at a time. Overthinking stuff isn’t an excuse to hurt people or be nasty smh. (Like I can understand how things can get overwhelming and anxious,) but that still doesn’t make it okay to be dishonest and cruel. 🤷🏽♀️ honestly a lot of the time I get embarrassed about being an INFP cause every other INFP I hear about never speaks their mind, is so freaking sensitive, and unreasonably petty. There is a line between reality and fantasy, and just because something is really bad in your head doesn’t mean it’s that bad irl. Just take a second to chill, maybe use some logic, and know that people don’t deserve your hostility. The stuff that goes on in your head- aside from situations where people actively manipulate you- ɪs ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴘʀᴏʙʟᴇᴍ. Grow. Up.

Taking up a PhD program is not for the weak hearted. I'm sure you ll definitely finish it with flying colors. Best wishes!

The thing with small talk is, I really hate it but often keep doing it because someone else starts it and I don't want to be rude so I just listen but am actually so annoyed Also I really thought I could be an INTP so thanks for that explanation Really good video(I should do school work until tmr but I'll just watch INFP videos to feel better)

I use to do it first because i dont want the other end feel uncomfortable. I hate it tho, but i know somehow it helps in digging the deeper conversation.

thank you, i thought i was INFJ for the longest time and obsessed over it never feeling like it was the right fit for me even with multiple people telling me I was an INFJ. INFP just feels more right. thank you!

So right about the career bit where we think we have a logical way to something. I’m just feeling that all our attributes are extra struggle to survive in what the world needs from us ...it’s just the practicality that’s required doesn’t sit with our inner core
@MichaelSimone4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, we are capable of using practical tools, but we're more skilled with other fields. Unfortunately society does not reward them very much!

Spot on video for identifying traits of someone who is an INFP. Your point about being misunderstood at times is spot on, it takes us some time to think through our thoughts and assess the situation. Feeling empathy for whatever I am listening to is also very relatable whether it's the music I'm listening to or the video I am watching. Great video for anyone getting to know someone who is an INFP! :)

Yes! Nice to see you're an INFP ☺️ I find it funny to see other people experiencing the same thing Ahah, especially for us INFPs who can feel alone sometimes. I'm glad you liked the video, thank you for being here!

the point about being creative but not aware that you’ve created really got me. i’m giving myself anxiety at work when i have actually delivered a lot of value!!!

Hey! I'm an INFP too. Just letting you know that most of us have a misconception of creativity as art creators, however creativity is an ability to solve problems in unexpected or innovative ways, so a manager or a mechanical engeneer can also be very creative :)

"you need time alone" part got me thinking that i find so much comfort in being alone with myself and thoughts and being able to analyze literally anything i want without people disrupting me that if i get the opportunity to be left alone for a long time i feel like i will be stuck in that hole XD

Thanks to this video, I finally settled on my type. INFP for sure :"D Been confused with INTP and INFJ, and now this finally makes sense. Funny, because I used to be a BSc Financial Analyst, and now I'm into Creative Writing and feeling so much better. Honestly, the entire video just clicks big time. Thank you.

Awesome video!! Yes to everything! 😂Thanks for the good laugh at “INFPs are not project finishers” For me I never had any confusion over being an INFP (except wondering yes if I’m really an extrovert) for many reasons including, often being totally lost in my thoughts and feelings and unaware of what is going on around me (often being late and disorganized because of it, and stuck in a rut yes!) constantly making up stories and looking for meaning in everything. That is interesting though about being a mechanical engineer because I also was good at math and especially geometry in high school and diagramming sentences. Thanks for taking the time to make this and share what you learned! Fun music too ☺️

I’m an INTP and I relate to all of these. But I “feel” logical because I assess information and come to a conclusion without an emotional attachment to it. I’ve met a few INFPs and all of them are or either have considered following a vegan or vegetarian diet, because they “wish”/“feel” it’s the best for them. In other words, do you follow or believe something because it morally gives you something? I think that’s a better way at explaining the logic of an INFP

I'm an INFP, for sure, but I love watching videos like this anyway (: Typically I don't agree with some things other people who've made similar videos say, but I loved this one, very relatable on each point you made, great video! I never knew some INFP's were attracted to STEM subjects, hahah but I can see that. I used to love programming and robotics, but now I'm a concept artist, both still very creative areas (:
