I work at a Dollar Tree (since November 21) and I agree wholeheartedly with Bethany. The FOOD watch the expiration date if you are going to get any food items. I cannot stress this enough. Toys, I have bought but I wld agree that most are cheap and will break. Storage containers, I LOVE them. Not only the food containers but just to store items like little craft pieces, ppr clips, etc and the bigger one's they sell seasonally or even every day are really good quality for $1.25. Toilet ppr, ppr towel....They're not a deal. Go buy better quality for a little bit more and it will last longer. Seasonal decor....they are stepping up their game with that! Even if you are going to give it a make over, it's worth in my opinion. And if anyone else works for Dollar Tree I'm sure you cld agree on these points too.

What Kiplinger's fails to realize while talking about food items is the fact that Dollar stores (Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Family Dollar, etc) are often located in areas under-served by regular grocery stores - or for some people they can get to the Dollar Tree without using / paying for public transportation. Yes, you get less, but you didn't have to pay for transit fare and then figure out how to lug a gallon of laundry soap and a bale of paper towels plus a ton of canned vegetables home. As to the quality of some of the items mentioned, it seems that "buyer beware" is a good motto in any store you shop in. Target & Wal-Mart also carry junk toys that will break before they are out of the package. I wholly concur tho on the automotive section of Dollar Tree - take that out and add to the Crafter's Square section (please).

Sometimes when I see name brand items at DT (even in the smaller packages) I'll get them just to try them out. Also, the name brand tiny package of car care items make a great gift package to give a friend who maybe just got a car. That way they don't have a bunch of big bottles of product they may not like. And you can make a super cute basket out of it. ❤️ So much of DT is hit and miss. It's like a treasure hunt!
@esmeraldagreen19922 жыл бұрын
I have shopped at DT for 20 years and I can say the quality of of their items has steadily decreased so in essence they have raised their prices every year without people realizing it. Here are some examples glass cups are thinner and cheaper, so are their plates, you used to get more and better plastic food storage containers for a dollar. Their little Christmas village houses were made of ceramic and not plastic, their faux flowers were better quality and the bunches way fuller I know because I still have a lot of that stuff and can see the difference between them and their current counterparts. Their Christmas tree ornaments were of a much higher quality and often they would sell them in packs of six instead of two. You could buy really big and very nice rattan baskets, I could go on, but if you have been a long time shopper you will have experienced the same thing.

I take my donations straight to treatment centers, domestic violence shelters, youth centers, etc. Goodwill is non profit, they focus more on job skills and training once an individual in need has been referred to them through an outside organization. Their focus is mainly employment. While other organizations focus on emergency housing resources, creating the stability an individual needs to obtain and sustain employment. I think a lot of people don't consider that a 25 cent increase on a dollar equals a 25% increase which is really substantial. It's fair that some items are definitely still worth it (tbh I'd pay $2 for quite a few things there) but if you are buying a lot it can add up. I usually do one trip a month and spend $40ish, and that same trip is now $50 >_

Crafting supplies are what I normally purchase. I see other crafters finding really cute things that my stores don't stock and that is pretty disappointing. Thanks for the information on the food storage containers. I do like the white microfiber cloth in the hardware department. I use them for blot drying my hair before I blow dry. They aren't the largest but scrunching my hair up from the ends with one removes a good bit of moisture. This post was very helpful, thank you!

I understand your disappointment. My store as well remains poorly stocked in the Crafter’s corner. But I have also noticed there you need to be selective. I would not get paint there unless I am in great need and Walmart/HL/Michaels were out. But the wood items they offer, AWESOME!!

I'd say ziploc bags are also a big NO to buy at Dollar Tree. You only get 8 or 10 in a pack. Far as wrapping paper goes, mine at Christmas gets Hallmark wrapping paper which I assume is left over from the year prior and sold off to the Dollar Tree. It's very nice though and even has the grid on the back. Its a definite purchase for the price.

Dollar Tree was a more fun place to shop when everything was $1, but the things that I buy are still a bargain. One example - water balloons. My grandsons love these in the summer. DT sold water balloons 100 for $1 last summer. The popular grocery store in my area sold the exact same water balloons 100 for $9! I actually went back and forth to check on this to make sure this was correct. It was. Tools - I buy my crafting tools at DT. I’m not disassembling a car engine. A DT screwdriver works great to take tiny screws off little battery compartments. The needle nose pliers and the level are the perfect size for me. I wish they sold a hammer. I love the parchment paper that pops out precut pieces as if they were face tissue. Other people seem to love it too because it’s frequently sold out. This message is getting way long. In summary: Just use common sense when you’re shopping for things that cost $1.25. (Personally, I won’t buy wrapping paper anywhere else BUT Dollar Tree.)

Thanks for your information and video! I agree with you and I'm glad to see someone else going over the price per ounce kind of pricing. We use Lava (bars) Hand soap here a lot, I'm a crafter and I mix my own colors of fountain pen inks, my husband loves working making dioramas so we get pretty dirty hands. single Lava soap bars at Dollar Tree is $1.25, but in Target and Walmart you can get 2 bars in 1 package for $0.98! You got to keep your head on at a dollar store, see the big picture. As for jewelry, I've never bought jewelry for myself there, but the bangles and their necklaces, some of their lighter earrings that I can change from pierced to clip are fine for when my granddaughter wanted to play dress-up. I keep an eye on the stuff like if any metal pieces turns green then those pieces either get tossed or if she really liked it, I'll seal the metal up with clear nail polish. I've bought the LA Nails nail polish at the dollar store and that is a name brand that I've bought at Walmart and Walgreens, but their nail polish remover, unless you get the name brand, does not work. It smears the colors around but doesn't remove it. At least that is my experience. The one thing I'd add to your comments about the food is to make sure to check the expiration dates on any food you are going to buy. They sell some herb crackers there from and whenever I find them I buy as many as I can. My husband has become a charcuterie tray addict and he loves those crackers served on the trays. In their case, the expiration date had passed by a month, but inside of the box are individually wrapped pks of 6 crackers each and each box has 8 pks of crackers. The crackers were still crispy and fresh. I see a lot of hacks for Dollar Tree items that are not at any of the 12 stores in my driving area and I've wanted to go to the brand new multi-million dollar headquarters (no wonder they had to raise prices) here in Virginia Beach and ask them why our stores don't get the same inventory as other states do. But they'd probably throw me out!

Thank you!!! Finally a KZbinr who isn't saying, "Oh its just a quarter, still a good deal!" That is true of some things as you mentioned but definitely not all. And those decades of keeping the one dollar price, many of those items were 79-89 cents elsewhere and that added up too.

I bought 2 of the small laundry detergent bottles, buy the large size elsewhere on sale and refill and refill the small ones. So I can carry small bottles to the laundry. You just have to be selective what you buy at DT and what works for you and your family. I was selective when the price was a dollar but even more so now. But that's always been the name of the game- be selective, get what works for you and your family and your situation. That should be the plan for anywhere you shop. And your situations may determine your plans. Right now I have to use public transportation so if I'm at DT I may buy toilet paper to tide me over till I get to where I normally buy it. I might get a toy for niece Elly because she's super careful with toys and rarely breaks one. But a toy for nephew Ben no. He'll have it broke in 2 seconds. It just boils down to individual needs, demands, and situations. But I agree DT may regret it in some respects. And we the customers will definitely regret their decision in some respects.

Here is the problem, many people don’t have the $11 for the large Tide even though it’s cheaper per ounce in the long run. If someone only allows themselves so much money per month for certain things or they need more money for food they may not be able to invest the $11 for detergent but they may have that extra $1.25 to spend. The thing is when everything is so expensive that laundry 🧺 detergent is considered a luxury item you know things need to change.

Lots of good points about DT. One advantage I still see is that you know exactly how much you are going to spend, and if you have the same amount each month, then you can adjust the number of items, hopefully. Also, there are a lot of price increases at Walmart and Aldi, but they don't fit into an easy category, like 25% more. Figuring out the actual price per item does prove that DT is not the cheapest anymore for multiple groceries. You win some and lose some, but I've always loved DT and will probably continue to shop there when I don't want to run to different stores. Thanks for your wonderful videos.

I agree. And when it comes to laundry detergent I always tell people to get the largest size for the cheapest price or refills. Take your small dollar tree detergent bottle and just refill it over and over again if you have to go up and downstairs in an apartment building. So I would just buy the dollar tree version once and refill it multiple times. It’s a good way to reuse that container over and over again. You could reuse the same container possibly for years. But if a person sticks with the same detergent they could easily get a dollar tree water bottle with the spout and put their detergent in that so don’t have to carry a heavy bottle. You could do one with detergent and one with fabric softener.

Hi Bethany, thank you for sharing this with everyone. Honestly your the reason I started shopping at dollar tree to begin with because of the crafting things I have replicated from you. Thing is I agree with everything you said In this video. I went there the other day to find a few pizza pans so I could finish a project and no dollar tree even has them anymore. I asked the employee when they thought they would be getting more in and she was very rude and said " I really don't know, we get what we get when we get it"! I'm beginning not to want to go there for much at all except a few crafting things that are still worth it for a dollar and .25 cents. Their storage baskets and containers are worth it and some of their make up is as well. I love the new ioni brand but again like I said I would have to give this video ten thumbs up because I do agree with everything you have said. Thanks again.

I think that is many of Dollar Tree employees answer now.. I have 4 DT's in our area, and I got the same answer when I ask about an item at two different stores. "We get what we get when we get it." I understand their frustration with shipping containers smack full that are being held and not shipped to the stores. But, on the other hand, another time I was in the one closest to my house, I ask a young girl about something, and she walked up and down every isle for me, just to make sure somebody didn't lay one down in another area of the store!! She was the sweetest!

Love this video! My Dollar Tree has not yet implemented the price increase, but I know it’s coming end of this year’s first quarter. I live in a more rural town that has a Dollar Tree, two Dollar Generals, a Walmart, & a Walgreens. With the price increase, I think comparative shopping with Walmart & Dollar General is going to be more common in my community (the Walgreens where I live is always overpriced). Some of the best items at Dollar Tree in my opinion are the full-size cleaning products from L.A.’s Awesome brand (even with the price increase). The only issue I’ve noticed is that the selection from that brand has dwindled at my local store, & according to the company, this price increase is supposed to allow them to bring back some items that they’d discontinued due to those having been cost-prohibitive/unprofitable for them. It will be interesting to see if this actually happens once the prices increase. 🤔 The 2-ply 148-count Scotties facial tissues were another item that I always felt was good value, but with the coming price increase, Walmart’s own store brand might end up being a better deal. The same applies to the 4-packs of votive candles. More school supplies will probably be purchased at Walmart comparatively this year. Dollar Tree gift bags & gift tissue are still winners compared to other places. I’ve never seen beach towels there either, but I do have a couple of sets of the hand towels & they’re actually pretty decent. 😉👍

Most food especially cooler, canned are no unless it's single serving cans but I get 2 to 3 servings. Snacks and cookies some yes. Spice drops are hard to find but 99% at DT. Sargent cheeses. Well done Bethany! My Dollar Tree shopping Do's and Don'ts take into consideration not only the price but the intended use. For example, I don't give a lot of gifts so I like Dollar Tree wrapping paper because it's a small roll. I can wrap my gift(s) and not have a lot of paper left over to store. Also, they have some very cute designs and I have several stores close to me. Closer than WalMart, Target etc. In regards to the durability, well, the Dollar Tree paper does tear easily, but it always makes it through to the gift opening. That's all that matters to me since we don't save our wrapping paper once a gift is open. I agree with your opinions about the DT products I have tried. I would really appreciate it if you would occasionally do videos like this for various DT products. That way I will know what things to avoid and what to consider that I've not bought before. I buy stuff like body powder, bubblebath, office supplies and craft supplies at Dollar Tree because I'm satisfied with them. I also buy bathroom cleaner, cold-water wash and dishwashing detergent, but I don't have anyone to shop for but myself, so what I use doesn't get used up as fast. There's a lot of stuff I don't buy there like food and paper products because they're of "dollar" quality and thus won't last. I deeply frown upon the 25 percent increase. I remember how Dollar Tree was a reliable anchor during that terrible recession of 2006 and beyond when so many of us were laid off and no one was hiring. Dollar Tree was THERE for us when we needed it, quality be damned. But now it seems as though Dollar Tree has turned tail and joined the rest of the retail "sheep" by increasing their prices. The twenty-five percent increase doesn't sound like much, but it adds up when you're on a budget, and you wind up feeling cheated.

I bought at CVS long ago two metal photo frames each for seven dollars and cents. Then I found the same one's at the dollar store. Learned the lesson fast. Thanks, I AGREED 👍

Great analysis. Everything is hit, or miss, and depending on the situation.

I live in Canada, so my DT has always been $1.25. There are some items now that are $1.50. But I understand why, even though it means I have to pay more out of my pocket, because they are having to pay more to bring the products in for consumers. I’ve just always shopped around for the best deals.

You are a DT guru! I love your knowledge of things like being up to date about being BPA Free! Thank you so much for sharing! 🥰

I love the themed socks, the adorable bags DT often has, & love it when they get a shipment of t-shirts! I've seen the same brand at Joann's for triple the price on sale! I like the over the door hooks, some of the gardening items, & the canned cat food.

I love their storage container stuff and my go to are their sponge mops!! I usually buy 5 of them. I love them because after a few times I can chuck it and the poles I can unscrew and use for my brooms (they can bend easy with minimal pressure) or whatever. I bought an attachment and these fluffy duster things and I freaking LOVE those for dusting my fans or walls because I have elevated ceilings and it makes short work of cobwebs or dust bunnies. Oh and they have THE BEST dish scrubber ever with a hard edge to get hardened cheese and whatnot from dishes. Those are great and better than a stinky sponge. The tools are also decent in a jam. The holiday decor is decent and has made many a poor time for me festive for cheap. One of the best ever cutting board with knife I got from there about 15yrs ago and that knife is still sharp and one of my go tos for clean slices. Sunglasses as well are perfect in a pinch for the lake or wherever you are going that you are bound to lose them. They also have a huge bottle of generic Woolite which if youve ever had to buy before is expensive and its for delicate wash alone items. I can think of a bunch! I don't do the food or makeup because it is always dried out.

You are 150% spot on about the power cords. You could literally charge something faster by hooking it up to your exercise bike and peddling for your life!

OMGosh...hooking cord to bike & pedaling. Too darn funny. I truly did laugh out loud.

Right now I'm on a very fixed budget and dollar tree is helping a lot. There r things on this list I'll always get at $tree like cards and party supplies and storage. The only jewelry I've ever seen there is a holiday novelty necklace

I like getting thank you cards from the dollar tree, I saw they have the spray bottles when I buy them at the beauty supply store they are between $4 and $6 so I can do $1.25 and they have cute colors so I can use them for different things. I also get the foaming glass cleaner from here when they have the windex brand I stock up for the house and car. But thanks for this I haven't been watching lately but I always loved your videos. Oh it's alway nice to find a good book, a crossword puzzle book or even those little crafting boxes for when my niece or my friends bring their kids over. It's great to have them on hand.
