"My favorite instrument? The cannon." -Tchaikovsky

RushFanatic87 I believe this the only music ever written for 155 howitzer. One does however, have to be very careful with the volume lest you blow up your speakers. I have this old 5 unit speakers. I would take the covers off and watch them slam forward when the canon went off.

Tchaikovsky did not claim to be a genius in composition but his mastery of orchestration and his use of colour was exceptional. It is frightening to think that he could have the entire aural image of the piece right in his head when he composed. The result is very vivid. The beginning of this overture is almost impressionistic and the instruments' colors lend themselves fully in presenting the overall aural picture.

The beginning is an orchestral version of a very old hymn, The Troparion for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. It was very relevant to the war since it contains the lines, "God save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance. Grant victory to Orthodox Christians over their adversaries". The original reading was even a little different, "...grant victory to the [Orthodox] Emperor over the barbarians" -- which give you a pretty good idea of how they felt about the French under Napoleon;)
@kantuckyjohn980410 жыл бұрын
SpectatorAlius Do you know where one could find this full hymn you've mentioned? I believe that is about as beautiful as any music I've ever heard in my entire life
@SpectatorAlius10 жыл бұрын
Where were you Saturday night two weeks ago? The full hymn was being sung in Orthodox churches around the world that night. Now you will have to wait until September to hear it again. Unless you can find it on KZbin. Try looking for "Exaltation of the Cross Vigil" if you want to hear it in English, "воздвижение креста господня утрени" if you must have the Slavonic Tchaikovsky used.

This gives me chill, all of Tchaikovsky music actually. To much people in his time said it sounded to "common" but I think i like it preciselly because of that,his pieces go from calm to exiting in a minute or two, feels like been in a roller coaster, and this is a perfect example. Start so cool and calmed until the last part, which ends giving you more energy than necessary :D

Let his little leg legs hang there doing the merry dance.....And just at the time you know its about to end...Boom,Bang,Bang those cannons rocket right through the heart and splattered against the walls, your mind falls to your those merry dancing feet....Still as elastic. Its all over when all the remaining pieces snap back into the flesh....And you know, you just know.....You just know where you been to others cant explain it for you!

erikwetbeard It's not elitist, it's accuracy. This is not a song, but rather a composition (hence Tchaikovsky being a composer). Since the musical piece was around for about a century before film even came into formation. This alludes to the fact that the composition reminds the original commentator of the movie "V for Vendetta" (proper written citation). Mark didn't throw insults at the other person for their mistake, but simply corrected them. You on the other hand have done nothing but throw insults around, which negates anything you say. You've committed the cardinal fallacy of ad hominem in an attempt to undermine what Mark wrote. yourlogicalfallacyis.com/

@juanalvarez45017 жыл бұрын
For those of you who don't know, this piece is about the Russian victory over Napoleon's army when he decided to invade Russia. The beginning and each subsequent change in tempo and melody, is Tchaikovsky's way of depicting both opposing forces. Beginning with the an idyllic piece that's supposed to create a sense of peace time in the Russian countryside. This is then disrupted by the approaching French Army, and, the call to arms, raised throughout Russia. Then, throughout the remainder of the song, Tchaikovsky's music switches back and forth, between both armies, culminating in the Grand Finale, with Russian forces defeating Napoleon, hence the cascading church bells, french horns and use of cannons.
