Notice how the lid bends through as you rest your hand on it. This may bend the dials away from the locking comb and let you open it with only the center dial in its correct position. It may also cause the comb to bend if the teeth come to rest on top of the dials before you take your hand off.

Great video. It made me think about all the people we will never know who handled the currency. Because old locks are so interesting, I've spent a lot of time reading lock patents (due to brain damage). They reveal what the lock biz thought it was doing at the time. Yale, after rejecting Frank Ellison Best's interchangeable core, was granted a patent on their current ICore, identified as a "hotel" lock. They saw it as a solution to room keys leaving with departing guests. Thanks, Bill.

1920s in Germany would have been the beginning of hyper-inflation. My mother-in-law has a couch and on the back of one of the legs there's a list of how the price for the couch went up while it was being built.
@johndododoe14113 жыл бұрын
Probably after it was built and was waiting for a buyer. Unless it was built to order and price wasn't set in advance.
@sittingstill35783 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen a lecture about monetary history and hyperinflation has existed for millennia. The earliest occurrence cited was during the fall of one of the ancient Egyptian dynasties. They created the inflation by adding more and more lower values into the coinage.
@johndododoe14113 жыл бұрын
@@sittingstill3578 Sounds like historical deflation to me, not inflation. But I expect your lecturer was making a stretched argument to support his pet theory about inflation.
@sittingstill35783 жыл бұрын
@@johndododoe1411No, it’s not deflation. Deflation is what has been happening in Japan since their boom a few decades ago. Their economy hasn’t grown so the prices of goods have stagnated and general wealth has not kept pace. From the Cambridge online dictionary: a situation in which less money becomes available without a drop in production, causing prices to fall, production to slow down, and people to lose their jobs: _Without proper honest controls, society suffers continual currency deflation and inflation._ I believe what you are describing is “currency deflation” which is the underlying cause of hyperinflation. If I’m wrong, please give me a link so I can learn more. 😁
@johndododoe14113 жыл бұрын
@@sittingstill3578 I was referring to the fundamental phenomenon of prices and wages decreasing, not to any theories about how monetary policy affects these major economic events. Specifically, I would expect price and wage deflation to cause an increasing need for smaller denomination coins, thus causing such coins to become frequent in archaeological finds from the time.
