Absolutely love this! I fell in love with this piece about 10 years ago, I saw a picture of it somewhere and it was love at first sight. Ended up trying to figure out what the heck it was for several months before an 1875 model happened to show up while watching Top Shot, and I knew I had gotten close. Dug a bit more and found out the picture I saw was the 1858, and have been crazy about it since. Definitely on my bucket list to get one and a few cartridges to go with

Wow there's quite a bit of hate in this comment section. I have been a Colt replica fan for years. I just purchased my first rimington last year and loved the fact that I could switch out my cylinders at the range. So far I've stuck with the black powder rounds as in Texas I do not need a permit to carry. I've never had a problem with my gun firing after sitting for several months. It is always been a concern of mine so maybe I should purchase a conversion cylinder for the house. Either way just wanted to tell you it was a very informative video and you did a great job. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of the replicas along with a very cool belt.

When you say, "I've never had a problem with my gun firing after sitting for several months.", did you mean that you left it loaded with black powder and ammo, and could shoot what's already in it several months later?
@blackpowderpapa7 ай бұрын
@@huyked The ones I keep in my home for home defense I fire once a year. The one I carry on my person everyday which is an 1858 Remington Ace I fire every single month. The Remington 1858 sheriff's model I keep in my truck. I fire every 6 months. I have never had a misfire utilizing this practice. Humidity is very high here in Texas so you can safely keep your black powder for that long in most other states unless you're talking about Florida or California. If you're carrying it on your body, it's definitely going to get the most moisture available, so that's the one I would practice with and reload consistently each month. Everything else you can play it by ear but 6 months to a year depending on where it is is good practice.

I got a Uberti Colt Walker 1847 44 Cal recently at a gun show. It came with a brown Triple K holster, Howell 45 Colt conversion cylinder and a powder flask. Built in 2001, it is very tight and the blueing actually has a blue tint to it. This might be the charcoal finish from Uberti. I don't believe it has ever been fired. The bad news is the Howell conversion cylinder is a bit loose. Howell says Uberti Walkers made before 2002 might need to be fitted. Like sleeving the bore or something? Kind of the reason I got it. The cylinder is larger and so takes 6 rounds and has plenty of steel between the cylinders. I just got a brown Triple K belt to match... the Josey Wales collection.

The 45 Colt was never officially called the "Long Colt" but there were shorter versions of the 45 round that could be fired in a Colt 45, so people started referring to the original as the "Long Colt". Winchester made a shorter version of the round.

I think it’s referred to as a .45 long Colt is so it isn’t confused with a .45 auto. This obviously wasn’t an issue in the 1800’s.
@rancidpitts82434 жыл бұрын
At the time there was 45 Colt, and 45 Schofield which was noticeably shorter in overall length. The Schofield would fit in the Colt and Remington as well as the Smith &Wesson that it was designed for. However the Colt cartridge would not fit in the S&W as it was too long. That appears to be the source of the commonly used name of "LONG COLT".

FYI, if all you have is a cartridge revolver, you can still load the 45LC cases with the same powder and .454 ball as the cap and ball versions use. Just a large rifle primer instead of a cap. You will want a wad over the powder. then crimp the ball in place.
@63DW89A2 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct in stating that the proper cartridge name is "45 Colt". The "Long Colt" and "Short Colt" verbal designation began around 1877, when U.S. Government Arsenals ceased loading the .45 Colt, and began loading the ".45 Government" round. The .45 Government was basically a .45 S&W Schofield with rim diameter reduced to the same as 45 Colt. The reason for the 45 Government is because the U.S. Ordnance Dept had started loading the 45 Colt down in power, to about 30 grains Rifle (similar to GOEX FFFg) under a 255 gr bullet, instead of the original loading of 40 grains rifle powder under a 255 gr bullet, because the very powerful 40 grain 1000+ fps load was difficult to train new recruits to effectively fire. U.S. Ordnance loaded the 45 Government with a custom blend of FFg and FFFg, carefully formulated to push the 230 gr bullet at 800 fps. The U.S. Ordnance Dept in 1910, requested that John Browning modify the ballistics of the 45 ACP to exactly duplicate the 45 Government ballistics. [John Browning's original load for the 45 ACP was a 200 grain bullet at 900 fps].

So far I’ve put about a box and a half of ammo through her since October and I’ve taken her out shooting about a handful of times. I always load 5 myself for safety. Actually, there were no Civil War Remington revolvers named after a year. What we see now in the replicas is the "New Model Army", which came out in 1863. A progression of improvements that came after the first version patented in 1858.
@jeffedge54862 жыл бұрын
It's just Rimington New Model Army. No year association. 1858 is a patent date for loading leaver and other improvements.
@timthorson527 күн бұрын
If production started in 1858, I doubt they would have named it the 1861, though there could be an 1861 version. As others said it may not have even had a year in the name of the gun. Find the 1858, or 1860 ish catalog of Remington arms to prove it wrong. Sometimes slapping the year in helps us distinguishing it from some other model, even if it wasn't what they historically called it. Mistakes are also sometimes made. We could call it "Remington-Beals", or "New Model" depending upon the version, but 1858 seems to stick. Perhaps a catalog has an 1861 version.

Nope, unfortunately you are mistaken ! There WAS a 45 short colt, and I'm not speaking of the Scholfield .45. The difference between the short Colt .45 & the Scholfield .45, was the rim diameter. The .45 Long Colt was designed for the Colt single action Army weapon used by the military in that time period. The problem with the "short colt" cartridge was that the rim was to small to effectively eject the shells in the Scholfield , so the wider rimed Scholfield cartridge was developed to accommodate the ejection process. The Army in it's wisdom didn't like the logistical problems that had occurred, So eventually opted for one weapon ( side arm ) that would utilize one cartridge, though all 3 were usable in the Colt Single Action Army. Hope this clears up the Colt cartridge controversy.

G somebody must have forgot that there was a 45 Schofield out at the same time. And it was a shorter cartridge that you could fire in a 45 Colt chamber. Not surprisingly, most of the loads that the Army used were 45 Schofield ammo in 45 Colt guns. But the reason that the word long was added to the Colt cartridge, was because it was longer than the Schofield. If you want to be an absolute purest, the 1858 Remington is a Double Action Gun. Because you have to not only cock the hammer you didn't have to pull the trigger, which is two movements you have to make to make the gun go bang. With the trigger cocking mechanism you only had to do one action, which was to pull the trigger.

you can buy an original,BP gun,not a replica as its fac,but originals are better guns than replicas,bullet mould,no fac req.,Dont shoot it or its an fac offence.But in the future if shtf happens,you can make metal caps,and a little chemistry,make caps work,and make bp.A few spare cylinders,not replicas as fac,and dont shoot the gun.But if shtf happens,you will have a valid man stopper,long after the roaming gangs,have run out of casings to relaod,and cannot get propellant,and primers anymore.You can still shoot.I am english by the way.you dont need cartridges,to exploit the magazine loading of a new model army,Its the same for cap and ball cylinders,the 1860s colt cannot do this.An expert can swap cylinders in less than 2 seconds,its the first magazine loading pistol.And you get a BP massive smoke screen,to move and hide,and re/load,and pop up somewhere else.Only dont fire your gun until after SHTF happens,But you can get all you need,gun and a bullet mould,with no FAC,and no registration.I have one but it is modified to a 5.5 inch barrel.originals in the uk,might cost 1500,and cylinders when you can find them around 200 a piece.my gun is original 1863,but modified for cowboy action shooting,by a gunsmith,but here in holland too,its legal to own,I dont have a bullet mould yet,my remington I had to go to a top antique gun seller in netherlands as i was maybe returning to the uk,to get a certificate to prove it is original,Because it was fully restored,with the front sight changed,for a dovetailed,adjustable blade sight,and fully re/blued,So it looks like a replica.It does not look like its over 150 years old,but the modifications decrease its value,so i bought it for 850 euros.but it is 100% legit,by serial numbers all matching.

I understand why they did the conversion. Just to get rid of what they had in stock and they were much cheaper then the cartage guns but when I saw the movie I thought it was cap and ball. I just noticed the cylinder in the movie gun frame does not have a cap/ring over the cartridges. In a closeup where Preacher just pulls the cylinder rod, you can barely see the rim of one cartridge and there is no ring over the cylinder. Further, the lower hammer face is ground to a point to directly fire the primers. This suggests a "regular " .45 cylinder made to fit the frame rather than a conversion cylinder with a ring and firing pins over each chamber. Was there historically such a modification or conversion?

I disagree with your statement about Long Colt. The name was usedto distinguish between the S&W .45 Schofield and the .45 Colt. The Army had adopted some Schofields before the Colt, and the cartridge was shorter than the Colt round. Having 2 different pistol cartridges was a poor idea, and the Army adopted the shorter S&W round as it fit both weapons. So, civilians, realizing the difference, would actually ask for the "long Colt" so they would have the slightly more powerful round intended for their weapon

Nice video of your Remington replicas👍. However, there is no such thing as a 1958 Remington! *Firearms expert Phil Spangenberger tells us: “The gun used in Pale Rider was a New Model 1861 (not an 1863) Remington revolver. These are commonly misnamed as the 1858 Remington of which there is no such animal. Navy Arms founder Val Forgett Sr. called his replica of the ’61 Remington the 1858 to avoid problems with patent rights. “I know Clint used the 1861 model. He pulled the lever down to slide out the cylinder base pin (there is no barrel wedge on a Remington) and removed the cylinder. With the cylinder removed, he replaced it with a fully loaded cylinder, held in a cylindrical pouch attached to his gunbelt. “This was a very accurate re-creation of how the early Remington cartridge conversion revolvers could be reloaded.”

It looks like you have something rigged up on the gated 1858 to push out and expel the spent casings, was that a kit you purchased or some custom work?

You should explain how it got the name 45 long colt.

Hi! Nice video! Any idea how much velocity is lost when shooting 5,5" barrelled 1858 when compared to standard 8"? I know there should be a difference in how much velocity is lost when shooting black powder versus smokeless but I dunno to which degree. Any thoughts?
@DemHighTimes5 жыл бұрын
not much. 50 to 100 fps loss
@RabbitusMaximus5 жыл бұрын
50 fps per inch is a rule of thumb many use as a conservative loss. With 2.5 inches, the idea of 100 fps max as the other comment suggests is not unreasonable.

Will the conversion cylinder you have there swap in a ROA. To me the ROA is a hybrid. Awesome belt.
@Kaliburz4 жыл бұрын
Gary J No, the ROA has its own. Even in 1858s, there is a difference between the two major manufacturers that the conversion cylinders do no interchange.

It says 45LC right on the weapon when you are saying there is no such thing as long colt. I mean, if even the gun manufacturers are now using the terminology I think we can be a bit understanding.
@casemcdonald21524 жыл бұрын
You're wrong. 45 colt, and 45LC, are different rounds. I forget which, but one of them is 45-40. Other manufacturers wouldn't use the colt name to describe the chambering.
@ryancawdor80834 жыл бұрын
Uh, No. 45 Colt was referred to as "Long Colt" to differentiate from the shorter 45 Schofeld or 45 Gov't round of that era. The 45 Colt was originally loaded with 40 grains Black Powder before being reduced to 30 grains per Gov't request for issue by the U.S. Army.

"They would look at you ...." Not quite fully correct. Yes, you are correct that there isn't any such thing as "45 Long Colt". No, you aren't correct that nobody would have understood. The military cartridge was the 45 "long" Colt. And it wasn't officially called that. What happened was a result of the adoption of the 45 Scofield as a secondary standard. In an attempt to standardize ammo, the military sutlers gave out Schofield ammo regardless of whether they were to be used in the Colt or the S&W. Since the Schofield was much less powerful, the soldiers quickly started requesting the "Long 45 Colt" ammo. Thus the users gave the ammo a name that was never official, but nonetheless is STILL a legitimate name because of Long standing common use. It was a legitimate differentiation because the standard 45 Colt used a 255 grain bullet in front of a full 40 grains of black powder. The Schofield used a 200 grain bullet in front of 28 grains of black powder. A significant difference to soldiers who were used to maximizing the range they used their weapons at. No, the 45 Colt was never officially named "Long Colt". Yes, it has been named "Long Colt" by users ever since the Schofield round became available.
