18650 - Part 4 - Battery cells bulk charging and discharging with TP4056

Finding batteries is one thing, but you also have to test them. Charging and discharging will be a very time consuming part of your build. To make it easier, you can build a bulk charger and discharger.
Here I explain the most used items for a DIY yourself bulk charger and discharger bank.
In the next episode I will explain more about the OPUS BT-c3100 charger-discharger.

If you look at the bottom of the PCB there are pads for connection of the 5 volts, you don't need to use the Micro USB socket.

If I use Imax BC charger with these holder cases, the cells are in parallel and are not receiving charge independently, as in your schematic, right?! Let's say I carry 2 or more cells in these holders (using Imax to charge them), even with cells originally of the same capacity. if I put 2 or more of them to load and they are at different rates when the process starts, when one of them is completely filled, the others cells will continue to be get loading until 100% of charge or not? If will, That one which has already been completed will continue to receive load, or not, or does the cell have any way to cease receiving electrons as soon as it completes its capacity?? I always had this doubt. Thank You very much if could explain this situation. I'm enjoying very much your videos.

Hi, when in parallel and thus not receiving charge independently as you say, they will charge until the charger reaches its final voltage. However, once shut down, and separated, it could be that one cell is higher/lower than the other. I do not think this is a problem if all cells are in good condition. If you have a bad cell, parallel with a good one, then the charger will try to keep charging, with heating possibility. To be 100% sure, an Opus BT-c3100 is a safer bet. This has separate charge control and overheating killswitch. You can see that in one of my other video's. Have fun and keep it safe

Regarding to your discharging unit, what is the different using 1 unit of 5W7.5R resistor compare with using 2 units of 5W7.5R? I saw the discharging unit comes with 2 resistor and they can be connected in parallel.

Nice video. Thx.I bought this same tester and it came with two resisters marked ZY 5W7R5 . I used only one resister and tested my havested good batteries showed before charging 3v- 4v readings. But after almost one hour draining the batteies this tester showed mAh readings made me frustrating. They are 0150, 0337, 0341, 0362, 0507, 0509, 0511, 0622, 0648, 0962, 0995, 1001, 1094, 1096,1425,and 1598. Are these my real capasity of my batteries or have to understand or how to read this readings? Thx for your reply to send me or correct way.

Obviously he doesn't answer questions from his subscribers. Anything around 15 to 20 amps should do the job. The higher the better. When it comes to 12v supplies I always like to leave plenty up my sleeve. If I need 10 amps I'll go for 15 amps. If I need 20 amps I'll go for 25 to 30. This way the supply is running cooler and will last a lot longer. I have a few 20 amp supplies which have been running for over 26 years and still as good as the day I built them. One thing I've learned, never ever trust the output of Chinese supplies. Often they're little more than a wild guess. Plus I've had too many literally explode during use. In fact one decided to shock us all at 2am Christmas Eve. It blew it's cover 10 feet from the power point.

Great work you've done there! One question, have you tried charging an over discharged 18650, voltage that is below 3.7v?

Hi, normal discharge is 3v, 2,5 and up is not good, but no problem if rare situation. Most chargers can handle this... (charging slowly up till 3v). If really low or completely depleted, you can change settings so will start at any voltage. I use a cheap Chinese battery bank where I can put 8 18650 cells in. This then charges with only USB. If in there for 30 to 60 minutes, voltage is up to 2.2v most of the time. Enough to put in real charger.

Did I miss your telling us what the combined maximum amps draw is from your 5v 30A power supply when 16 x 18650 3.7v discharged cells (each behind a separate TP5056 charging board) are connected in parallel ?

If each TP4056 is rated 1A, then the current is going to be 16 amperes when it is in CV (constant voltage). It is going to start to drop when the cells are going to be near 4.2V.

Should work, but you cut your capacity by half. One waiting for the other. You better charge and discharge at the same time. You'll get more cells tested in the same time.

just a quick question the lg 18650 battery from ebay (Lithium Ion ICR18650 MF1 2150mAh ) 20x cells each cell is 2150 ah. The spec sheet says Max. Charge Current 1.0C(2,150mA). So when you have this pack 36v 10s 2p what is the maximum ah current can you charge it 2ah 42v current or 2ah current x 20 cells ~ 40 ah current at 42v. Now if you have 3x 10s 2p in parallel which is 36v 12.12 ah what is the maximum ah current you can charge thats 60 cells is it 60 cells at 2ah current which is 120 ah current for 60 cells or just 2 ah for 60 cells using cccv charger Thank you very much

on first question I would say about 4 Amps on the 36V pack. You have 2x2.15Ah, so 4.3A for charging at 1C.

The best thing to do when discharge testing 18650's is to check the manufacturers spec sheet, that will tell you what the minimum discharge test voltage is. Most of the ones I test recommend 2.6 volts. At 3.0 you will not get all the MAH the battery can supply.

Opus is best, no doubt. However price/quality I now use li-500 as main chargers/testers. The tp-4056 is cheap but sensitive... Need replacement often...

If it is lipo 1cell you can charge. You can change minimum and maximum voltage if not lipo.

Opus will be correct because you know what amount of MA is used. In the little charger from this video it depends on the resistance you give it. If only 1 block, it's about 500MA. You could try the same cell in opus at same charge and compare.

Hi, for the discharger, there is no number on mine. Others which look the same have SKU391894. You can search them on "DIY 18650 Discharger". Make sure that you have 2 resistors per unit. The dischargers are very inaccurate.... the ones I have anyway. The voltage and current are both incorrect when compared to measurements with a Fluke meter.

You can calibrate these little things. I haven't done it, but you can. That way they will be accurate and give results you can compare if you have multiple units.

ran through the procedure here..... syonyk.blogspot.co.nz/2015/10/zb2l3-v20-zhiyu-battery-tester.html ....all seemed to go ok but end up with the same inaccuracy..... 0.1volt and roughly 40ma difference to everything else used to check..... shorted the resistor to get the 2A from an adjustable supply.
