Operation: Reforger/Certain Strike (part 2)

In 1987, during Operation Reforger, combat cameraman Glenn Sierra documented U.S. Army Soldiers training and working in Combat Support units which are focused on providing operational support to combat units.

One small minor quibble: The purpose of REFORGER was not necessarily to conduct operations "in anticipation of a Soviet Invasion" although that was always the primary contingency that USAREUR was always supposed to be prepared for. The purpose of REFORGER was rather to test the deployment of forces from overseas within NATO from every major seaport and airport in Western Europe, and to ensure that NATO could deploy those forces to Germany in the event of any contingency - the Soviet threat being preeminent among them.

I participated in REFORGER from 1987-1990. Was assigned to 3rd COSCOM, 16th SUPPORT GROUP, 8th MAINT> BN, 53rd HMSC. We assisted in the unloading of equipment and storage until equipment was picked up by assigned unit.

142nd S&S Bn. We went to Nijmegen 86 with them. They were at the Wiesbaden Air Force Base

The hot shower after 45 days was awesome. Never felt better after that shower. Only got to fire ten live rounds while there.

In 1944 the nazis formed a "militia" of boys and quite old men that, in spite of their short training, did fight against soviet troopers and were able in markmanship with MP40 and other guns that had not need of being well trained. It is strange that NATO didn't encourage the formation of a German "improvised militia" against a Soviet invasion; the US would have provided tanks, artillery and tactical air force and German civilians would have fought as extemporary infantry. Even a civilian can use a M16 with some days of training, not like a marine, but with some efficacy, yes

Well to be honest we don’t know that such a plan was already to roll out . We do know that the us army had their most highly trained and to this day most top secret special forces team deployed permanently to Berlin and their mission was to stay behind after Berlin was over ran and conduct unconventional warfare in the soviet zones . I’m sure training and organizing a insurgent type of war was a tactic to be employed. They also had the task of possibly using nuclear suitcase weapons and such things . Detachment a was so highly trained they actually were a major source of training to what became delta force and in fact were deployed with delta in operation eagle claw . A very small amount of info is now declassified about the unit but a whole lot is still classified and will probably never not be
