Bill I have an old Eagle USN brass padlock with an insane keyway. Been working on it for over a month and I can barely get a pick in there to touch the pins and that's using .15 praxis picks. I'm tempted to send it to you and see someone finally open it! Nice work, they do have some nasty but fun warding.

Very impressive little lock! Amazing what resistance a tight keyway like that will add to the overall security of the lock! Why don't more manufacturers use this method ? 🤔

That lock would have to be on the end of some kind of sliding door that had two notched peg pins, so it could have been for a Roller Desk and the lock was in the desktop it would make sense for the mechanism to be flush, it could be closed if the lock in the locked position, it is spring loaded catchers.

One thing I was wondering is if when it was in the locked position if the mechanism was able to be pushed to the side and therefore exploitable. Great lock and something modern companies could learn from.

So glad I found this - I thought I never would! Any chance of finding a door lock video for an Eagle lock? I have an Eagle lock (as far as I can remember) which is a family relic but we have unfortunately lost the keys for it when the door was remade. I have never seen one of these locks anywhere and maybe someone can help me. This desk lock certainly resembles it a lot - the door lock is of course a bit beefier and certainly much longer. The key ways are a definite tell-tale sign - I think mine has 5 or maybe 6? pins. I'd really love to get this lock repaired and have keys made but there's no chance I'll find anyone that can make keys for it in Greece. Ideally, I'd like to find a locksmith - not a machinist! Even more ideally (!) I'd like to find an original key!

Companies like that are smart enough to make a cost vs. benefit analysis. They've probably concluded a long time ago that making a better product will not translate into making more profit. So why would they? It's not like they care.

Very nice.. just one thing Bill- a full rev is 369 degrees.. not 180, but it will take you half the way.. ;)
@Gameboygenius3 жыл бұрын
You have to rotate the cylinder 360 degrees in total as with any pin tumbler, so the pins will line up. But I think what Bill was saying is that nothing happens for the first 180 degrees of the turn and then the locking/unlocking happens during the last 180 degrees of the turn.
@KomenCents3 жыл бұрын
@@Gameboygenius yeah these kinda locks latch in at around 90° before rotary completion. (The other way it starts at ~ 90°)

Just shows the power of a keyway. A 4 pin lock with what we assume is all standard pins. Chuck in the mix of all that simplicity a devilish keyway and the lock suddenly become quite a challenge. Edit: I forgot to add, couldn't it be gutted?

@4GSR3 жыл бұрын
Be interesting how they cut those keyways in the cylinder, what ever they call it, at the factory. Can't be broached because it has to have some kind of hole for a broach to start in. Do they have some sort of bandsaw set up with a round blade that cuts the profile, then come back with a broach to finish the keyway? Be interesting to know the process they used to use back in the days.
@dickdastardly42363 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing they use some sort of scroll saw. They could index the lock in a vise using the pin chambers and the vise could sit on four pins that slide in a track the same shape as keyway. This would be an old-school method without any computerization. I'm probably way off and the real solution is much easier.
@stanburton62243 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing lost wax casting with a rough hole with a broach to finish it.
@robertoswalt3193 жыл бұрын
It was probably cast with a core in that shape. Using cores in castings is a technique that has been done for ages.
@4GSR3 жыл бұрын
@@robertoswalt319 Yes, I'm very familiar with that process. I've worked with it for many years in my profession. Just don't see how that would be profitable for such a lock. Of course, that is probably why it is not built that way today. Even with modern locks like the infamous Master Lock, how can mass producing them be cheap? It's still a timely process of making the core, scratch that, make the wax pattern, coat it with ceramic, autoclave it, the pour the brass to make the part. Then you have to finish it! They got to be using a much simpler process! KenS.
@kevincampbell19753 жыл бұрын
I had the same thoughts, so I did a youtube search and found one video showing a german company with a machine that uses 16 different small broaches for the keyway. It was surprizing to see how quickly that cylinder shot through that machine. Of course this is an older lock, so they may not have done it that way in the olden days.

It seems like it would have to be a lock for something like a roll top desk. Something has to come down into those locking pawls in order for it to engage them. It's not set up as a drawer lock.
