Foursquare releases would be somewhat accessible decent rum. It's not completely to my tastes because it's very bourbon-y, but it's still good. Stuff like hampden overproof is more up my alley. The best stuff that I like, which applies to scotch as well, is the single barrel releases that tend to be more expensive and of course more regional/hard to find. Many common rums like Zacapa are sweetened with sugar BTW so the rum nerds will look down on these type of rums, however there are many that enjoy them so there's nothing wrong with that, I just feel like people need to know that the rums they're drinking aren't "pure".

Papa's Pillar 24 is an excellent rum. The Special Edition releases are amazing. The Special Edition finished for six months in sherry casks is a truly magical beast. Most runs are great for mixing into things. That one is a thing unto itself.

Ron Zacapa is comparable to Macallan for me. It is hard to say what the best rums are because there are differences in region similar to whiskey includes bourbon and scotch. Rums from Jamaica, Barbados, and Guyana are typically well regarded. Some good beginner brands are Appleton Estate, Foursquare/Doorly's, and Hamilton.

here are some rums i would love to hear your thoughts on: appleton 12 (blended aged rum from jamaica) smith and cross (pot still lightly aged overproof rum from jamaica) wray and nephew (blended unaged overproof rum from jamaica) rum fire (pot still unaged overproof rum from jamaica) hamilton pot still black (pot still black rum from jamaica) rhum jm white/blanc (unaged or lightly aged rhum agricole from martinique) clairin sajous (unaged overproof clairin from haiti) also check out hampden and habitation velier from jamaica. lots of rums like zacapa 23 have added sugar. to my knowledge, none of the rums listed have additives except for the hamilton - black rum is a style of rum that uses caramel for coloring (which may add some flavor as well). zacapa 23 also gets a bad rap because the "23" is incredibly misleading. it uses a solera system, but the age statement refers to the OLDEST rum in the solera instead of the youngest one. i think yall would really appreciate overproof jamaican rum. laphroaig and port charlotte are my favorite spirits of all time, and the unaged stuff in particular is rum's answer to islay scotch imo. rhum agricole / haitian cane rhum / clairin are made from a mash of sugarcane instead of molasses, and have their own distinct flavor - often described as grassy, but i get grapes and plums from the rhum jm blanc. its a completely different world from other rum. this stuff reminds me of islay scotch too, but where the unaged jamaican rum has all the gasoline/diesel/fuel/chemical notes, cane rhum has all the boggy/planty notes.

I'm a huge rum nerd and part of the reason other rum nerds look down on Ron Zacapa and such is that they add a lot of sugar and don't disclose it, which is kind of a thing going on in the rum industry right now. Honestly I would say that the sort of "entry rum" so to speak for a lot of people is El Dorado, specifically El Dorado 8. Once you become a proper rum nerd you are probably searching for the funkiest Jamaican you can get your hands on that has notes of like burned rubber and rotting fruit lol. I guess kinda similar to how people gravitate towards peated whiskey over time usually.

For a good intro to rums you could try: Foursquare (any expression), Real McCoy 12 Year, Flor de Cana 18 Year Rum or Kirk & Sweeney 23 Year Gran Reserva. The Foursquares are hit or miss availability wise, but the other three should be pretty easy to find.

I love whiskey and rum. Appleton Distillery in Jamaica was my introduction from whiskey to rum. Foursquare Distillery in Barbados is the other stuff to look for (Total Wine carries their stuff). Not dosed with sugar so they're drier and woodier, similar to whiskey.

Would be very happy to see some rum on your other channel. You have after all done gin there so testing some other spirits would only make sense. Especially for when whiskey has been aged in those spirit barrels (rum, port, cognac, etc.). Some rums to try are definitely Appleton 12/21, Foursquare 2005/2006/2007/2008, Worthy Park Single Estate Reserve, and El Dorado 12/15/21

For anyone in the know a question: is it OK to have a slight whitish sediment on the bottom of an unopened bottle of whiskey? And looks like there are few tiny unknown particles floating. The cork is screw down metal one, typical for Japanese. The whiskey is Tokinoka Black Blended Whiskey from White Oak Distillery in Japan. Really appreciate any input. First time I see something like that.
