Everybody says Mary Had a little lamb like they are the magic words to make this work lol

I guess so but it is the same words that Thomas Edison spoke into the horn when making the phonograph, in which many people think that's the first recording ever, but it actually is from 1860, a recording of Au Claire De La Lune

Hi. Impressive results. Would you mind sharing any details on how you built this? I would like to try and build one myself. I'm especially curious on what you used for your diaphragm and stylus, and also the mandrel. Your results are some of the best I've heard from phonographs like this on KZbin.

Hello wernerempire, sorry I am only replying now (a whole year later LOL!), but I was totally unaware of a setting on my channel video options that actually "blocked" me from seeing/replying to comments on my videos!! Only figured out last night now to "unlock" it LOL! Crazy I know! Anyway... Regarding your question, I made contact with a Mr. Charles Smith in the USA in February 2011 and he assisted me in a kind of 'online training' session that lasted almost a whole year till April 2012. We corresponded by email; I sent him schematic diagrams / pictures of what I drew and he would 'yes' and 'no' and give advice, as I live in South Africa and he in USA! Had to make them easy to understand as I couldn't sit next to him in real life! But we got it made in the end. Here is a link from a website on how I found him as he had made 6 models of the Scientific American. www.phonozoic.net/tinfoil/index.html I had failed again and again trying just to build a WORKING tinfoil phonograph of any model! I wanted to give up so many times until I found Mr. Smith!! It took me 23 years (1989-2012), but he was very patient and assisted me! If you make contact with him, he may send you the original 1878 plans which appeared as part of a supplement to the Scientific American magazine. Here is a PowerPoint presentation on my 23 dream to get a working machine made which I presented in Cape Town in 2014 (IASA Conference) and again in 2017 (SASA Conference)! www.saarchivist.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Christopher-Grov%C3%A9-ONE-SMALL-STEP-FOR-TINFOIL.pdf Regarding the diaphragm material it was a rectangle of a kind of metallic "sheet" material, not sure as it was posted to me with all the other parts to assemble. For the stylus, it was an old gramophone player stylus cut in half that you glued into place in the stylus bar. The mandrel I believe is made of solid steel with a grooved thread cut into it. Hope this helps :-)

That and wax cylinders were among the earliest recording media... however the first recording media was I think charcoal on paper. It wasn't realized back then, but recent computer technology was able to decipher the recordings and play them back. Saw a fairly new documentary about this recent discovery.

One thing i don't understand.... In EVERY SINGLE tinfoil phonograph-video the hosts do the same effing recording, the "Mary Had A Little Lamb" It's driving me nuts... Is it cuz it's an easy strip to carve into the tinfoil or something?

In 1877, Thomas Edison invented the phonograph, the first machine that could record sound and play it back. On the first audio recording Edison recited, “Mary had a little lamb. Its fleece was white as snow.

@@mattssonfelix3882 they do it so you can see the effects this recording process has on the voice. It helps to remember that the recordings from this time would sound way different than their actual voices as demonstrated in the video.

Hallo, ich will so einen Phonographen nachbauen, was für eine Zinnfolie/ Alufolie/ Tinfoil kann man denn benutzen? Wie dick … und mit Klebe ? Grüße aus Berlin; sorry mein Englisch ist Not gut
@CG197812 жыл бұрын

That is very well made and works well but i wish people would think of something original to shout into these things, I am sick of hearing the same nursery rhyme, if only Edison had shouted something more interesting back in 1877 we would not have EVERYONE SHOUTING THE SAME FUCKING THING ON ALL OF THESE VIDEOS!! 🙄🙄🙄
