Wow taping yout buttons down before sewing is a genius idea and honestly actually life changeing! I used to use 4 pins to hold them in place but the only thing that method was good at was to stab me into my fingers... Your corset turned out beautiful those cute little buttons are a perfect addition!
@ShannonMakes

Ooh, I'm so glad you found it helpful! I use tape a fair amount because I used to sew a lot of leather, and pins (obviously) don't work well with leather and even if they would, they'd scar it, so I would often use masking tape, double-sided tape, or sometimes even spray adhesive (in different situations) to hold various pieces together prior to stitching!

oof, i love the finished corset! and the whole taped-down buttons attached with twill tape and closing with such easy welted button holes...and power mesh sides...just wow. i'd love such a corset for weekly contradancing.

Thank you 😊 😊 I feel like no creative endeavor, unless it's a pattern you're making for the millionth time, is free of mistakes, hiccups, errors, miscalculations, etc... it can be challenging if you're on a time crunch, or if you hit A LOT of snags all in one project, but in general, taking a deep breath and going back a step is always a good way to approach it! And yes... Cannelle!!

How have I not seen this yet? For some time, I’ve had a project in mind of a custom support garment for myself, combining the benefits of a stay, a sport corset, and a chest binder. I’ve been trying to do research, but it’s definitely more difficult to find info on some things than others. Thank you for this!

Beautiful! Great explanations! I also appreciate the matter of fact expressions. I utterly dislike getting a pain in the part of me being tallest when picking lingonberries (!) You're saving my bacon! You may want to try placing a ribbon over the grammits next time your mashine refuses the motion. It works with mine, and the ribbon will easily be removed as soon as it's served it's makeshift purpose. Thank you so much for posting!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 3 жыл бұрын
I am so glad you enjoyed the video, and mmmm.... bacon (oh yea, and lingonberries!). And you are very welcome for posting! So the problem with the machine was actually that the grommets were holding the foot of the machine up too high so that the needle couldn't get low enough to interact with the bobbin thread. I even tried to lower the needle a bit in the presser foot to kind of cheat and see if it was snag the bobbin thread, but it didn't work. But I like the ribbon idea for when the texture of the fabric is the problem - I've heard of this trick for some of the more finicky fabrics, which I've yet to really deal with!

Thank you for this whole series of videos. It’s so nice to learn more about the practical side of historical dress and not just high fashion. I’m making 1905 outfits for my nearly 2 year old daughter and myself. And as far as I can tell the child corsets are pretty close to the health/adult corsets. I have some cotton canvas I use for my own corset mock-ups and some coutil. Do you think I can use that for her corset or would you rather recommend I order the fabric you used in this video? Also where did you buy your cording? I live in Denmark, so it’s really nice to see danish stores mentioned.
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 2 жыл бұрын
You are very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it! From my (limited) research, I agree that children's waists seem very similar to health corsets, although even more "boxy," with almost no curves. I feel like Marion also has children's waists listed in her patterns, if you want to give that a look (in fact, I was curious so I just checked, and she does). I am no expert, but I do think you can use what you have. It's also not going to take a huge quantity of fabric either, if you wanted to order some of the twill I used (ordered online from stofkiosken.dk), and the cording is from STOF & STIL, Bomuldssnor vokset 1mm hvid 10m
@regitzeroos2874

@@ShannonMakes Thank you for your answer. I will try with the fabric I have and order the cording from STOF & STIL. I bought some patterns from a 1905 la mode illustree in which there is all the needed undergarments including a corset for her size. I think it’s fun to use a original pattern to learn more about the period clothes.

Thanks to your video, I just scored 702 antique buttons for $33, many of which are underwear buttons! Do you think reed would work for the boning? I am partially disabled and as such will not be circusing in mine, so I don't think perspiration will be an issue and would love to avoid plastic, if possible. I do have zip ties on hand, if reed won't cut it, though.
@marionmcnealy1329
@marionmcnealy1329 3 жыл бұрын
Reed might work, but I'm not sure. It does tend to get brittle after a while, and break. If you don't want plastic, you could always go with steel like the original.
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I don't know much about reed, but I do know that the Warner Corset Co -one of the largest producers of sports corsets in the 1890s- made a huge part of their fortune on Coraline (also called Tampico fibre), which may be similar to reed?! It's definitely worth investigating what tampico's properties are, and how it compares to reed, but I tentatively suspect it'd work? Otherwise zip ties would probably do the job, or even just using a bit more cording (and maybe more of the 2mm cords, instead of the 1mm ones - I used them in the CB next to the grommets, and they're a bit stiffer). There were certainly plenty of corsets that were only corded, without bones, although to be fair, I do see references to the fact that these ones were known to wrinkle/bunch in the hip area, so *something* a bit stiffer might be beneficial.

PS What is that you're using for marking?? I NEED that. I am having trouble with my tailors chalk and that looks perfect!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 3 жыл бұрын
It depends which thing you mean. I usually use the Bohin mechanical chalk pencil, which... as someone is VERY reluctant to actually buy things new... I actually can't recommend them enough, especially for very precise garments like corsets. They're amazing, but I only have white chalk for that, which clearly wouldn't work in this case (they do sell other colors, I just don't have them), so here I'm using chalk refills for one of the fabric chalk pencils that has THICC chalk "lead"... then for marking the seam allowances, I just used a regular pen, because... it's a seam allowance, and having to sharpen the chalk all the time was a bit bothersome ;-)

Ahh, I just found it - it was in that strange black hole of "you aren't friends so we don't show you that you have a message" section... Thank you for the offer, that's incredibly sweet of you! However the shipping to Denmark is probably more than the cost of a foot, unless you're already in Europe! I think I will start by keeping an eye out in thrift stores and recycling bins for a zipper foot - just yesterday I thrifted a foot that is not quite a zipper foot, but much skinnier than a normal foot, so already off to a good start :-D
