I found this Mason & Hamlin reed organ in an antique store and decided to bring it home. Follow along as I make some repairs to make it a playable instrument.

My Dad repaired an old reed organ once, the biggest issue was hunting down all the leaks! When restored and properly working however they are lovely instruments.

Having you show how the reed organ operates gave me flashbacks to 2012-2013 when I spend days watching your Sabre series, learning a lot about maintenance and bike building in the process. Learned enough to get my own NX650, start wrenching and eventually got to work at a shop as well. Many thanks for the education! I'll definitely be referring to this video if I ever have to fix the reed organ we have at the childhood home. :)

It's good to see the first part of this. I was really confused when I was watching the last video thinking I had missed something

This is great! Thanks! I have one of these which must be 60 years younger, and not as beautiful, but for all intents and purposes is identical. Will be opening it up soon.

The Reed Organ is very expressive by how hard you pump the Bellows (which are in this case operated by Pedals), just like the Accordion. A Luttbeg Double Keybard Accordion (or something similar to that) would be a fun one to try because there's not as many moving parts as a Regular Accordion so they're super lightweight, plus you can cover any Piano Sheet Music (even Realized Continuo parts of works that have them such as BWV 248, BWV 244, etc & the Barenreiter Editions are amazing due to their ease of redability & being true to the Original Manuscript.

It's an Octave Coupler which couples the Notes w/ the Notes an Octave above (sometimes an Octave below as well depending on the Model).

5:00 it looks like that nail slipped from the split in the block of wood next to it. makes sense as that piece is diagonal

I have one of these that I'm gonna repair as a little summer project. Barely playable but it should be fun to fix. Mine's a mason and hamlin as well. It was found in a dump in 2000, no idea how old it was at the time but it had clearly been used for a long time and then probably sat around for a long time as well before being thrown out. After it was discovered it was taken to a local town's church and used for nearly twenty years until it became too... well, "crap" for lack of a better word, to be used. It sat in an old lady's foyer until received it from her free of charge in 2023. All I gotta do now is tear it apart and repair it. Easy lol

I've just gotten a 1930s Kimball that I'm about to restore. How did your summer project go? I'd love an update!

@@chaussetteknot Unfortunately life got in the way and I never got the spare time to fix it up :( Hopefully get it next year though! It's not like I can forget about it, it's the first thing you see when you walk in my front door lol

I have an issue with the strap that links a pedal to the bellows. The other pedal is fine, but I can't work out how to take it apart to fix the otber strap!

Would it be helpful to use a leaf blower to rid the insides of accumulated dust?
