Shooting my 1896 Krag and getting the sights close at 50 yards.
I mistakenly said this was a Danish design. Not sure what I was thinking at the time. "NOT, Danish design but Norwegian. The whole thing. Developed and designed by Ole H. Krag and Erik Jørgensen - both Norwegians of course. And hundreds of thousands of them built at the factory in Norway." -@hauk9794
Appreciate the corrections!

I have two Krags that were purchased long ago. One is a standard long barrel and the other one is a carbine from years ago as well. It was re-blued down the road and it's a piece of art. I reload for them, but I should shoot them more often. Great rifles.

Quit babying that old war horse. The extractor is designed to snap over single-loaded rounds so you're not going to hurt it by applying a little force. Same with the ejector, it's design requires a modicum of rearward force to properly eject the spent case. The 1901 version rear sight you've got on your carbine is the best of the 5 variants that were put on the Krags, be glad you've got it. Here's some pretty good info on the sight adjustments (copied from kraigwy on the Firing Line forum): The sights settings are based on a 220 gr RN bullet with a MV of 2000 fps. (And with a 30" barrel) When the sight is laid down using the rear notch you set the rifle on Battle Sight. On the left side of the sight is the letter "B" and yard markings. The rifle is carried in normal conditions with the slider set so the notch is lined up on the B, (BSZ) which would is set for 375 yards. You can use this sight for 100 to 400 yards. The other mark on the slider is used when the sight is flipped up. It goes from 450 to 1900 yards. The peep in the rear of the slider (when the sight is flipped up can be used from 100 to 1775 yards. The at the top of the sight when its flipped up is set at 2000 yards. At the front of the sight is a lever that you loosen so you can pivot the rear sight for windage changes. The windage marks on the rear sight are 0.04 inches a part. each movement per mark moves the impact 5.56 in at 100, 11.74 at 200, 17.69 at 300 and 58.8 at 1000 yards, (rather course). Just FYI, Krag's don't generally like 150gr bullets. Stay with the 180's or heavier for best accuracy. Spitzer shaped bullets won't bother it at all. Good write up. Enjoy that old piece of American firearms history.

Haha thanks! I’d be a lot more nervous if the reloads weren’t done with this exact rifle, and the load data written right on the box. But I definitely see your point…could go badly! I did have some loads for my K31 (by the same gentleman) that were suspect. The charge weight and bullet selection were fine, but the bullets were seated way too long and jammed into the rifling a good bit.

I have the same rifle. (1896 w/24" barrel) Mine is missing the wood at the top of the chamber that the rear sight is embedded in. Did all the 1896's have that wood piece?

Its still nice looking even cut down, another giveaway for fakes is the rear sights have on left side an r (rifle) or c (carbine) & cleaning rod hole is plugged. Theres a lot of fake krag carbines & trapdoor springfields at gun shows, they get mad when i point out that its fake. Your M1901 rear sight is my favorite cause its so adjustable, i even use it on 3 40MM cannons (2 still under construction) My orig. 1899 carb w/sight cover, oiler & cleaning rods in butt was $5 in the 1950s (was my dads). Just got a cut down 1898 also with an 03 front sight 2yrs ago for $200 at a gun show. Good Deals can still be had u just have to look harder.

I love Krags. I started collecting them and parts when I was 8 30 years ago lol. Most of what you said is correct, the rear sights will be marked C for carbine but the rifle sights typically weren't marked with an R. That's more of a trapdoor thing. Easy way to tell besides the C on the base and ladder is the Carbine sights are graduated up to 2300 yards and the rifles 2000 yards. The plug in the stock is not a cleaning rod plug, it's a lightening slot plug, only model 1892 krags had full length ram rods and most were sent back to the arsenal and altered having the rod channel plugged and a 3 piece rod issued in the butt trap. Also most carbines have a C on the front sight blade, which helps to tell if its real because people rarely go that far into detail to fake one. My favorite are the people who claim to have "Philippine Constabulary" guns when they are just 1905 school guns which are build the same. There are only 3 Constabulary's known in the US. Hand guards are a good way to tell too. I've collected so many parts over the years recently I started building them to move them to new homes, I have enough parts to do 5 complete rifles and 2 complete 1899 carbines. Love those damn guns!

Fakes is not the right word, altered is a better description

@@Siskiyous6 as I see it, it's a fake when done on purpose to deceive buyers. As a collector it's easy to spot. I've had sellers at gunshows get mad when I pointed out it's not original at all be it a trapdoor, krag, no.5 jungle carbin ect. The value on these is only poor to fair prices at best in reality but that goes for all military guns altered at all, I've got quite a few mil sporters because they were so cheep. On the ones that can be saved I rebuild to orig for my own collection, been doing it since the 70s😊

"Danish design" Hell no! The first Krag Jørgensen designs were sold to Denmark. Later Kongsberg Norway sold the design to Springfield. The gun is Norwegian. In use by the Norwegian army to post WWII

U didnt show how to remove the bolt by lifting the front right side (theres an under cut for your finger) of the extracter while rotating the bolt at the same time. Shorten the front sight blade to bring P.O.I. up ware u want it, file shoot file shoot untill it right😊.

I haven’t been showing any disassembly lately. KZbin sees that and flags it as “firearm modification” which is absolutely ridiculous, but whatever. I may end up filing that front sight down as you say. Thanks for watching!

For what it's worth, using the bolt the way it's intended is not being "rough with it."

This is a US Springfield Model 1896 rifle, not a US Krag Jorgensen. Let's give proper credit to the skilled gunsmiths at Springfield who produced such a fine rifle.
