I quite like this Bailey but when I viewed one at the NEC one of the little shelves near the fixed bed on the 4 berth model was already hanging loose. The interior furniture quality seemed quite poor. I own an Eriba Troll and agree with your positive towing experience as the Eriba is only 2.0 m wide and I’ve been up to Scotland and on narrow Welsh lanes with no problems at all. I’d be interested to see you review an Eriba in the real world as it’s a bit like a shrunken Airsteam so may suit you well.

I absolutely love the outside of this caravan but once inside, it doesn't look cosy at all. It looks very minimalist and clinical. This isn't helped by the lack of curtains. I'd definitely need a separate shower too, not just a wet room. Sorry Bailey but I prefer my Pursuit.
@andrewjditton3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, the Pursuit has been superseded by the Phoenix+, which still has curtains etc. The Discovery appears to be offering an alternative rather than a ‘lower’ version. Interestingly enough, the new Unicorn has no front curtains, so it’s becoming a trend. That said, I wish the Discovery had the Pursuit front window! Thanks for watching.
@kezza56463 жыл бұрын
Oops! I've learnt something new. I didn't realise the Phoenix+ had replaced the Pursuit. I thought the Discovery was the replacement as it's now the cheapest in Bailey's range and I know my Pursuit was a budget entry van. Thanks for putting me straight on that one Andrew. I hope you and Dougal continue to enjoy your adventures together. I certainly love seeing on Instagram what you both get up to. Take care x

Thank you for the review as I am just about to downsize from a luxurious, and relatively heavy, with a fixed bed, caravan to a lightweight, more basic vehicle, almost going back to where I started, and the Bailey D4-2 is on the list. However, my concerns and worries about Bailey and build quality and design have only been confirmed by your review. You mentioned "small niggles", but I regard water leaks emanating from "insecure joins" in pipes, sagging tables, poor quality and loose clips, and even poor weight distribution as far from small niggles, I would suggest that they are major, and to an inexperienced caravaner, and there are plenty currently, even dangerous. Unfortunately I think I might have to cross the D4-2 off the list, which is a shame when I look at the positives that the Bailey has, including a great looking bespoke awning. Indeed what a shame!

I do like the size, perfect for 1 or 2 people, plus dog. I love a teak floor system in a wet bath. And there is always the Japanese style of toilet slippers just inside the bathroom door (the advantage of watching KZbin from around the world). Obviously, you keep them outside while showering.
@andrewjones-productions3 жыл бұрын
The toilet slippers are generally just ordinary vinyl slippers with トイレ (toire = toilet) written on them. A better solution would be the cleaning boots (soft ankle high wellies for want of a better description) that are specifically for cleaning the unit bathrooms we have in Japan. You can search on Amazon Japan (in English) for them, by typing in 'bath boots' (バスブーツ in Japanese). Alternatively, click on the link below, but if you are worried about scamming and spamming, please do the aforementioned. www.amazon.co.jp/s?k=お風呂用掃除靴&ref=nb_sb_noss

Excellent, thorough review. Quite right that fun and light weight isn’t synonymous with entry level! Loved it when I saw it at the NEC, other than I thought the furniture board was poor, has to be lightweight but was sagging due to show pressures on day 1! Hopefully manufacturers will start to look at lightweight aluminium composites, etc. But takes a completely different approach to manufacturer I.e. rivets and bonding vs screws...
@andrewjditton3 жыл бұрын
Hi Becky, I believe that they went back to the drawing board after the first NEC because of the quality issues, and these definitely seem to have been addressed in the model I had.
@CaraVanOlogywithBecky3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewjditton that’s good to hear, was sure we could trust you to say it how it is I.e. you would tell us if it was terrible. Have to admit I’m one who the original offset rear seam upsets, from your footage looks like that’s also upgraded now I.e. purposefully at 1/3 (or using the golden ratio!) and with trim so a bold statement rather than cba to get it in the right place, that makes all the difference between naff and quirkily fabulous statement. Also love the wrap around awning though a problem on some sites with the larger models in the range (D3 is my fav, though I think they missed a trick not putting a bunk over the rear dinette) so hopefully there is an awning channel access point at the rear of the straight section to enable a smaller porch to be used. As always fabulous video and glad you enjoyed, thanks, Becky.

I presume you have to pay to have a van up-plated? It seems very unfair to sell people a van that you can't put clothes, bedding, crockery, pans, toiletries and food in for your holiday. Surely as a safety issue, as long as it doesn't exceed the driving licence requirements and the car's limit you shouldn't be penalised. Also why have all the storage if you can't use it?
@andrewjditton3 жыл бұрын
Yep, hence my ‘storage volume vs payload’ comment Cathryn!
@cathrynbagley80053 жыл бұрын
@@andrewjditton Who chooses these payload numbers anyway? If there is a family going on holiday there is not so much room in the car to load the car instead. I'm glad there are channels like yours that point out these things. Thinking about the Basecamp - this is supposed to be designed so that you can load it up with out-doors equipment such as bikes and kayaks - would this also make it overloaded? If so this is a massive failing.
@steveb18563 жыл бұрын
@@cathrynbagley8005 The Basecamp has a higher MTPLM and can be plated up to 1300kg (may be higher on the latest model) in standard form it has a payload of 110kg up plated it has around an extra 260kg giving a total of around 370kg payload. Seriously usable👍
@andrewjones-productions3 жыл бұрын
@@steveb1856 That is true. However, the biggest failing of the Basecamp in my opinion is that despite its 'outdoors' appeal, it is still the equivalent of a 'saloon/sedan' in car terms. Whilst I don't think it needs to be a full on off-roader, it should have been designed to be somewhere in-between (a small or medium size SUV in car terms if you will). What I mean is a higher chassis on more rugged wheels. The hitch would need to remain the same height, but that is relatively easily done by attaching the hitch under the drawbar and not on top of it as customary.
@steveb18563 жыл бұрын
@@andrewjones-productions Simply not needed for the UK sales market which is what Swift target. Where can you legally use an off road caravan in the UK? Not needed for any legal caravan accessible site in the UK. Elsewhere maybe but it would be a tiny niche market. It’s bad enough with the freeloading camper vans trashing the countryside parking where they like and calling it wild camping🤣 without having idiots hauling caravans off road. Having towed it around the single track roads of varying quality in the Outer Hebrides and used various (proper) campsites from flat level hard standing, rough crushed rocks and sloping grass fields it works just fine. To be an off reader the whole structure fixtures and fittings of the van including chassis would have to be much more robust and therefore much heavier, limiting who and what could tow it. There are such caravans out there but they are not mainstream and are made in small numbers by niche manufacturers. Swift want to sell volume, primarily to the UK and the Basecamp has sold in big numbers for them, so why would they produce a niche product that sells in tiny numbers?

Well, Dougal seems to like it, doesn’t he? Perhaps you could develop this as a ratings system for the vans you review, a bit like Siskel & Ebert’s ‘thumbs-up/thumbs-down’ film reviews. Seriously though, every time I buy another dodgy campervan that needs an engine rebuild before I can even get it off the drive, I think about sticking a towbar on my Passat estate and investing in something exactly like the Bailey D4-2. Maybe one day, who knows? (*Incidentally, if anyone does this, you should act as quickly as possible: plunge the affected area into water as hot as you can stand. @andrewjones-productions3 жыл бұрын
Andrew, thank you for this very honest and comprehensive review. This helped me to decide upon purchasing this model. Whether it will actually end up being this model or the next generation (depending on whether Bailey update the range in the coming months), I cannot say as I am in Japan and the only local Bailey dealer (to which I was responsible for recommending Bailey) has told me that there will likely be a long delay. Upon landing, I will likely be the first Bailey caravan owner in Japan. I only wish you had made up the beds in both single and double-bed configurations but, c'est la vie. Not even Bailey have a photograph or video of this online and their downloadable user manual does not even show it. Stay safe!
@andrewjditton3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, I did measure the beds in the 'first look' video a few weeks back. Apologies for not including the pull-out section made up, but it really is extremely straighforward. I used the double bed every night (as Dougal leans!) and it's a breeze thanks to the flat cushions. I did leave the table folded up and slotted the narrow (back) cushions below it. I think you'd get a few inches of overhang on these if you put the table down. Hope this helps.
@andrewjones-productions3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewjditton Andrew - thank you! Your reply does help a lot. Yes, I had seen you measure the lengths of the singles in the first video. I had seen some comments by a D4-2 owner who complained about the raised table being in the way, hence why I had hoped to see. Your kind explanation above has quelled any need for that and made clear that the narrow back cushions can slot underneath - fantastic! Anyway, I foresee at the moment that I am far more likely to use as two singles and have worked out where I can put the two long narrow back cushions out of the way. Stay safe!!

No, as far as I am aware it is illegal to tow any trailer that weighs in excess of its PLATED MTPLM.... even if you are within chassis and axle limits. And yes you are right, an 'up-plate' generally consists of nothing more than a new sticker. But rules is rules...

Andrew tows with a Nissan Navara which has a towing capacity of around 2000kg. The caravan weighs 995kg making it almost half the weight limit of the Navara, hence towing at 50%. The recommended maximum for towing is 85% of the tow vehicle weight, so the tow vehicle is heavier than the trailer for maximum stability. I hope that explains the term?

Hi Andrew and Dougal,thank you for another informative video . I am really enjoying & learning from them. I am new to motorhoming and learning something new each time. I am just looking into purchasing a motor home to travel Europe. I just wanted to ask if you would know if there is an AC unit or cooling system out there that can run on 12v as I would like to be off grid for most of my travel time. Many thanks James

Hi James, thanks for watching. Sorry I can’t help with the off-grid AC solution. Cooling and heating are generally too much of a draw for 12v. Maybe look at a solar panel and invertor that could power a small AC unit when the sun is at its most powerful? Cheers!

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it. I'll look into your suggestion. James.

We have a Bailey Pegasus 4, they have similar jubilee clips under the bathroom sink, they leaked on our first night away, absolutely drenched the bathroom, they weren’t very easy to tighten up either so had to take it back to the dealership

Oh no! Not good. Hopefully they will re-think those.

I know you guys hate to be compared to America, but from my perspective, the size, weight, features and cost (converted to US$) is a bargain! Seriously, an excellent value! Delivery charges here vary, but there’s a rule of thumb I use to roughly estimate if the cost is fair. Here some manufacturers average the expense for all states, some don’t. Estimate the wages, fuel, tolls, for one person to tow from the manufacturer to dealership, and return empty. Often for that fee I couldn’t drive from my city to the manufacturers city and return for that amount. Thanks for another wonderful review, love these! Hugs to Douglas!

@richtea78 - Agree! But Winnebago quality is like they are made by bunch of drunk and stoned addicts with few remaining brain cells.

Nice video, but please explain MRO and the other abbreviations for us newbies. I have not found one web site that explains these so you can understand.

Hmm... sounds like a good idea for a video, thank you! In the meantime check out the Caravan and Motorhome Club Technical pages for a good place to start.

Hi, do the seats extend to make a double & are they a nice size (& comfortable) as either singles or a double to sleep on?? Thanks in advance

Hi, do please check out my 'first look' video for the bed sizes. I pulled it out to a Double every night, and yes, very comfortable!

Nice review, thanks, and some good tips for potential buyers (eg payload and plate upgrade). We had a quick look at one at a dealer and felt the same as you about the poor table and screw covers, but maybe these will be improved in subsequent releases. Still very much on our "possibles" list.

I was with you until you mentioned the additional weight of an additional socket at the front which actually would be negligible...
@andrewjditton3 жыл бұрын
It’s not the weight of the socket. It’s the weight of the cable. Wiring looms can amount to many kilos. Negligible maybe, but every few kgs matter when you only have 51kg to play with.
@martingilligan3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewjditton it would be ounces, its not as if you have to use heavy armoured cabling. If a socket was important I would just leave one bottle of my chosen beverage at home.

At every caravan and Motorhome show there are 2 or 3 stalls selling armoured 2 and 3 mtrs usb cables, not sure whether the6 are any good or not.

Is the internal floor still untreated timber (plywood-sandwich) with loose lay lino over it or has this been upgraded since the Orions? esp in the locker bases under the seats. We had this in our Bailey Orion. If so this is a real weak link in the construction, as the walls/roof are fine, but the floor is still a plywood insulated sandwich. We had a slightly leaky external locker door which lifted the plywood off the insulation core under the lino before we even had spotted the minor drippage :-(
@andrewjditton3 жыл бұрын
Now that I don't know I'm afraid Mike... I think Bailey might have go upset at me ripping up the lino! But thanks for your comment, as it is a question I shall ask next time. Cheers!
@mikeshacklock62083 жыл бұрын
@@andrewjditton That’s the thing the lino in the locker bases could just be lifted in the corner of the locker, not glued, just a stationary staple if you were lucky on an Orion!

I'm not yet a 'van owner but hope to fully convince the Mrs very soon! Have watched countless reviews for months now and have to say, this has been the best type of review that l've seen. So much so, l've subscribed.... and l've never done that before either! Thank you and keep up the good work. 🙂👍

Thank you for an interesting review. I found this interesting, as I have an Xplore 422. Though the Bailey looks quite stylish, I'd still pick the Xplore, due to its separate shower. I do agree with you about entry level caravans. They have everything you need.

Cheers David! Yes, an Xplore 422 is a very tempting option! Thanks for watching.
