I think they put out a call for every barnyard and got them all in that boat! Wow, I’ve been on a lot of boats and seen some knuckleheads but the sheer quantity of them on that boat is impressive! Great fish by the way and way to hang in there with it!!!

Nice setup Jared, I'm actually looking for a med/light duty fishing rod for 15-25lb Yellowtail fishing specifically. What mono line rating is your rod? The 10-25 or 15-30? Also would you change it with the lighter or heavier version since you've been fishing with it? I'm looking to purchase a rod for this weekend so hopefully you can help me with my choice. Thanks a bunch in advance! -Vik

Hey, I have a question for you. I use bait casters all the time. Usually for halibut, calico etc.... I use a 2 speed Avet with 60lbs braided line and a 40lbs mono top shot for yellow tail, Dorado, tuna and even rock fish and sheep head. I prefer to use this set up even for halibut weighing more then 25 lbs. I see you here using a bait caster for a 18 lbs yellow tail and I am pretty impressed. What kind of bait caster is that, line weight and rod (heavy, medium heavy)? Would like to use my shimano chronarch or shimano matanium for sport. Any advice?
@AttritionAngling10 жыл бұрын
Chronarch would be really tough to fight anything in the 20+ lb range. I hooked into some big bonito with my Curado 200E and they almost overpowered it. My buddy had a Calcutta D and he fought a 25lb yellow tail and it gave him a work out too. Im using the Daiwa lexa 400 with a power handle. Its got great drag and a lot of cranking power behind it. I prefer level winding reels as opposed to conventional style. I get more accurate casts and line management is one less thing to worry about. The avets have the upper hand with distance for sure and most people favor them for bigger game but the Lexa made me feel at home being a baitcaster (im a freshwater bass guy) while still being able to muscle fish around. though I do like using the smaller baitcasters (Chronarch, Tatula, Curado, etc) for Calicos in the kelp. The setup in the video: Daiwa Proteus 8ft Heavy action Daiwa Lexa 400 HSP 30lb flouro leader to 50lb braid Salas 6x Junior yoyo jig I also mainly use a Daiwa Saltist Levelwind (size 30) with another medium action proteus rod. I have another video where I fight a 20+lb yellow with that (my first big yellow) with this setup and the lighter rod made the fight a little more difficult but it was a bit more fun trying to manage it.

What kind of weight can the proteus handle 20 30lb tuna will be ok? Btw nice vids

I have the proteus 8' mh with a lexa 400hd and was able to bring in a 30lb bluefin tuna no problem , the first one I caught and lost at the boat was a little bigger , those proteus rods are excellent in my opinion.

my personal experience with buying 300 dollar rods is that this rod it's only 180 its feels very high quality it has Fuji guides and a seat, this by far its the best budget rod and it has lifetime warranty pulls big fish without a problem

What pound test braid where you using and where you using a topshot? Sweet video!
@AttritionAngling10 жыл бұрын
I believe it was 50lb braid. 60 seems to fill up the lexa spool a bit much so 50 is the sweet spot, giving you more line for them to run with (especially since we were using 20-25lb flouro)
@gregh74539 жыл бұрын
Jared Bell The 400 holds about 250 of 65lb spectra. Plenty of line for that kind of fishing. Nice fish!

Is that the 400 or 300 I just got the 400 what rod should I use I like a good backbone
@AttritionAngling10 жыл бұрын
its the 400. Pretty great reel for the price point. I use it with the daiwa proteus Boat rod heavy action. The combo is perfect for me for big yellows and big cuda. Really muscles them in and turns the yellows heads easily so they cant dive down into the rocks or kelp.

Nice vid. I've haven't been on a charter boat before but I think seeing someone run around a boat is clue to pick up my line. I have the same setup you have for deep sea, except my reel is the lexa 400 hslp. Can't wait to start. Question, I noticed on my proteus that came in there's not a trigger. Is your 8 footer like that also?
@AttritionAngling9 жыл бұрын
correct, the conventional boat rods have no trigger. the new proteus inshore rods do have a trigger though

@solraymond9 жыл бұрын
Jared Bell Thanks Jared so is that all you need for yo yo Iron. I read different places that you need a 7ft rod rated around 30-60. I like the rod you have because I feel you can do more with it.
@AttritionAngling9 жыл бұрын
+Big Ray I like the heavy action 8ft because I can get over and around everyone on the party boats when they get a bit crowded. And the heavy action has a heck of a backbone to turn the fish's head and muscle it around a bit. I always use either 50lb or 65 braid to a leader of 25, 30 or 40lb flourocarbon (depending on if the fish are big, near rocks, aggressive, finicky, etc). I go a little overboard but I usually bring at least 4 setups when I go out. 7ft extra heavy with 40lb mono (heavy yoyo, heavy jiggs) 8ft medium with 50lb braid to 30 lb flourocarbon (for small jigs like colt snipers, wax wings, etc) 8ft medium heavy with 30lb mono strictly for tady 45's 8ft heavy with 65 lb braid to 40lb flourocarbon for medium sized yoyo or bigger surface irons. All of them serve different purposes and it's just about finding what the fish want that day and how they want it presented. I usually target yellow tail though. I did happen to hook up to a 25lb ish yellow tail on my medium rod and it kicked my butt. It was like using a noodle. Currently I only use proteus rods (4 of them) because they are the best bang for the buck, look sick and get the job done.
@solraymond9 жыл бұрын
I wanted to get a couple different Proteus Rods myself. I wanted the 20-50 Heavy. And I want to get the Medium 10-25 Proteus. I was wondering if that was a good rod for flylining achovies
@AttritionAngling9 жыл бұрын
+Big Ray the medium is killer for fly lining. It loads up really nice on the end and can fling the little chovies way out there without popping em off.

I noticed at the beginning of your video you were manually peeling line off the reel. Was this because this was your first cast and the line was sticking (we all know braid does that), or was there some other issue? Just curious. BTW rad fish!
@Silbaugh4liberty10 жыл бұрын
Small spool diameter, it will over run itself, so you need to keep it flowing smooth and get the jig to the bottom. I got 4 yellowtail so far on the same exact setup. Nice video!
@gregh74539 жыл бұрын
Silbaugh4liberty The Lexa 400 is a beast of a reel. Spool size is not small at all. Thumbing it will keep it from backlashing.
@AttritionAngling9 жыл бұрын
Andrew Kloster i have this habit of peeling line off manually because I feel like the lure is going to drop directly where I casted it if I can get the line off of the spool fast enough. If I just let it go in free spool and let the bait fall, I feel like the line tension is going to bring the bait slightly back to the boat as it descends instead of dropping where I originally casted.
