When my mother was a child, they lived for awhile in her grandparents house. There was no heat in the upstairs bedrooms, but the floors had square holes in them, covered by metal grates, to allow heat to rise from downstairs. Also, they would set bricks on the woodstove and carry them up to bed with them, wrapped in a towel, to put in bed by their feet.
