The contemporary category of 'plus size' is hugely limited and beholden to the arbitrary norms of the fashion industry. Also, you should really tap into some of the gluttony debates of the 18th century and realise that the rich certainly had the funds to indulge in luxuriant eating (particularity when empire made imported luxuries available)

Yeah, I hate that. I'd much rather carry my items on me rather than carry around a handbag! Look at men these days. They carry NOTHING! They just zap shit out of their pockets, easy peeezy! No fathing about with heavy, deep bags that you can't find anything in! HANDS FREE so you can carry shopping easier. Even strappy bags that you wear on your shoulder are a pain. and FYI: Annie Andrews, they did have little pouches as bigs in those days.

I also love how, if you look at it closely, the maids are wearing the same style of clothing as the rich lady, just in simpler, hardier fabrics and simpler in terms of having no ruffles etc. but I just love that everyone had access to the same styles just using what they could afford to make their own versions

She rummages on the floor for anything that may pass as clean, eventually finding a shirt she dislikes, which she wears over a pair of jeans, which are ripped in multiple places, then hurries to the kitchen for coffee."

@@112steinway That's kind of similar to what I was saying with the fanny pack trend. It's died down a little bit, but I can still see it persisting later on because of the practicality. A lot of fast fashion retailers do prioritise money over...y'know, fashion. Whether they're avoiding putting pockets in women's clothes because they want to sell purses or cut down on materials it's annoying. At least some skinny jeans have reasonably-sized pockets in the back.

It’s actually a calculated decision made by the fashion industries to make more money. If women’s clothes have smaller pockets, we need something else to carry our things. Thus, the purse. Manufacturers make pockets smaller on purpose so we’re forced to buy more bags. Honestly, you’re better off sewing your own pocket into your leggings or altering a pair of men’s trousers to your taste.

For those wondering about the wooden thing she slid under her corset, here is the answer: A busk (also spelled busque) is a rigid element of a corset at the centre front of the garment. They were intended to keep the front of the corset straight and upright, and were typically made of wood, ivory, or bone slipped into a pocket and tied in place with a lace called the busk point. These busks were often carved and decorated, or inscribed with messages, and were popular gifts from men to their sweethearts.

I believe that question should be directed to the ILGWU. The lack of pockets can be related to keeping the cost of the garment within manufacturing costs or the design of the garment. I have sewn for many, many years and have added pockets to garments when the patterns did not have them. Pockets were a necessity during the era portrayed in this video, as purses/handbags were not used on a daily basis.

2 facts ! 1. they actually weren't too hot ! clothes back then were made with natural fibers, which dont absorbs heat near as much as the synthetic and plastic fibers found in most clothes today. many of them were also made of light fabrics that could breathe, and the amount of under garments and material they were made out of was probably altered depending on the season and weather. 2. corsets were not torture machines! they hardly hurt women and no one removed ribs to look better. a lot of the specific shaping in those days to achieve certain silhouettes was done by making other areas appear larger with certain structured garments or loads of padding. also, the paintings and photos surviving from that time that depict scarily small waists and large hips were altered or changed to fit that style in that time, much like today's photoshop. many corsets actually helped women. they provided comfort and structure for the clothing that was worn, and for working class women, they provided great back support for hard labor.

Corsets are only torture if you tie them too tight or wear one that is too small for your body. My sister has worn several dresses with corsets and they never hurt her. I've worn a corset dress once or twice and it never hurt me. As long as they are the right size and not tied way tighter than they are supposed to, they are just fine.
