One of the best videos on a true woodmen bedroll and haversack kit. These educational videos are important so that we understand where the modern day 72 hour survival kit originated. Back then it wasn't for survival it was "just how they rolled" no pun intended! Thanks for sharing Brian.

Brian, awesome videos and so informative. As a reenactor , I can say you are a great asset to our community. You say you are not a reenactor but you are living and breathing history. Please don't sell yourself short. I don't portray a long hunter but my Indigenous person(Iroquois) impression will be enhanced by your videos. Please find a unit to help our hobby/lifestyle become more authentic. Plus us lefties , in an 18th century world , need to stick together. Took every bit of me to not tell you your gun lock is on the wrong side , thanks for all you do brother.

Good job and a good kit. If there are 20-25 of us you can bet there are as many different choices of what to carry and how. There are always the common needs, but personalization makes each unique. Dig your no nonsense approach. Keep it coming. Great stuff.

Well thank you and you are correct people will pack and carry different things to suit themselves. As it should be too much of you have to have this and that in today's world, probably back then too. As far as my approach yeah I can't be any other way

I know it never rains where you live, however you need to wrap that with your tarp, if you think it to big get a lighter weight blanket, the weather will kill you without shelter. otherwise per usual great stuff, presentation great! love your style
@Snowalker138 жыл бұрын
Well first of all it always rains in my state of NY, secondly thanks for your suggestion however I don't need to do anything like that. Wool is hydroscopic and will retain it's insulative properties up to 80% even when wet. The dead air space alone will keep me fine bro trust i have done this awhile. I am not discounting what you say however I don't worry so much in the warm parts of the year in my area. If I was in a colder climate maybe. Thanks for your comment and glad you liked it!

Nope thats down to personal choice again. This kit is not set in stone I don't know how to make it any plainer than what I said. Hey Brian great video as always. Like you I have developed and use an 18th century kit when I feel overwhelmed by modern technology and need to re-boot. It's hard to describe how much more enjoyable it is to get out and hunt/camp/trek with gear you have made yourself. Any plans to do an extended outing with this kit and tape it? I for one would love to see something like that.
@Snowalker138 жыл бұрын
Somewhat We filmed a winter outing which needs editing, but truthfully carrying cameras during trekking is a pain and detracts from the fun of it

Great video, Brian! Didn't quite understand the tying-off, but it's still good. Would you do ones on what the war parties & Roger's Rangers actually did? I know fighting would be situational, but it seems there's aspects of making camp or keeping alive if you get separated that are worth knowing.

Enjoyed it. One thing I always wonder is how the woodsman deal with rain. I know the blanket is some what water proof but if a heavy rain came it would be hard to wrap up in it, and clothes being wet. Could you address these problems thanks
@Snowalker138 жыл бұрын
On occasion I will carry a tarp, they had other items as well watch coats and others you can research it as well. Thanks for you're question
@MrDlanglois5 жыл бұрын
Life was a lot more uncomfortable in the old gear compared to a lot of modern gear. But the ability to set a tarp and build a fire can make for a pretty comfortable setting. Bucksin clothing would not be very compfrtable when soaking wet. All that said, the traditional gear has a romance to it. I believe I read in SEEDTIME ON THE CUMBERLAND that moccasins were only a little better than no footwear. Something to that effect. For dry cold, my wool and moosehide mukluks are the best. In the Pacific Northwest, where I live, it gets pretty wet. I use a combination old and new technologies.

good vid, but.... you don't need a fry-pan for bacon, you can just grill a chunk over coals (its good to score cross-hatches on it so it cooks more evenly), or cut it up and boil in your beans, peas, corn, whatever... myself, I always carry jerked meat and/or pemmican. sometimes I carry bacon or dry sausage (landjaeger type) but I don't have a fry-pan...

OK, well I, have a little experience, I am from Northern Minnesota, and had 30 years in the infantry, in my experience I didn't have the options of going home or leaving, and know Rogers Rules well, been all over the world. Now if you think you are giving out this info and wouldn't take a a comment like this, you could get some hurt/killed, One of all/everyone's basics, what is your options other than get under a wet blanket to your car?! You didn't even have a waterproof canvas jacket. Come on you are better than this
@Snowalker138 жыл бұрын
Well that makes sense behind your original statement, and if I lived in Minnesota I probably would carry a tarp due to you weather patterns. Much like if I were in the Adirondacks or Maine. Again I did not discredit your comment I merely stated that I along with my skill level need this kit for trekking on a re-enactment basis. Furthermore I explained that this is what I carry and that anyone else would have to choose what THEY wanted and it would be up to Season, area, needs and personal choice. I further stated my kit changes all the time based on these things. So I am at a loss because I hardly think most people are going out re-enacting on the level of experimental archaeology as I am. As far as options? Well lets see, I could have a shelter already in place that I go to, or possible a rock shelter, or I can fashion one in the woods, I could pay attention to the weather in the first place and build a large fire ahead of time, I could pile on leaves. First and foremost I would have already let my significant other know where I went, what time I went, when I'm coming out, what is was wearing, who if anyone was with me, Where I parked the vehicle I was in and so on. I just don't get where you're going?
