On this episode of cooking every national dish, Stoofvlees from Belgium
Stoofvlees from Belgium
 1 kg of beef in cubes
 2 onions chopped.
 100 gr o thick bacon in little cubes
 1Tbsp of butter
 1Tbsp of oil
 2 dark beers
 2 slices of bread smeared with mustard.
 4 cups of beef stock
 1/4 cup of molasses
 2 crushed garlic cloves

season the cubed meat with salt and pepper.
-In a Dutch oven or a heavy bottom pot combine the oil and the butter on medium heat until its melted and it starts bubbling
-brown the meat in batches being careful not to overcrowd it. And set it aside.
-deglaze the bottom of the pot with a little bit of the dark beer.
-add the bacon and onion and cook it for 15 minutes.
-add the dark beer, garlic, meat, beef stock and molasses
-mix it all then lay the 2 pieces of bread and mustard on top. Bring to a boil, cover it with the lid a bit off set and simmer for 2 hours.
-mix it all together. the bread will be dissolved and absorbed by the stew.
-enjoy

As someone from Belgium one of the best beers to add is Grimbergen and next time try and cut you nest a bit bigger but that looks delicious

sadly my liquor store only had 2 to choose from and the other one was not a dark one.

Every Belgian has his own (or his mom's) recipe, so all Stoofvlees is different. You can throw in a slice of bread with spicy mustard. I use st bernardus 12 abt for beer. Sometimes add pear sirup to sweaten it. In Flanders we pronounce it "stow-flaze". Btw put some mayonaise on those fries!

Hi, looks amazing. I have my own recipe too, i dont use bacon and use speculoos cookies or the spices used for speculooos. This is a tip from the belgian friend who teach me to make it.

Looks very good! Glad you enjoyed it! Which beer did you use? I also thought it was strange you say it's cheap. Because I can imagine that getting Belgian beer in the States (?) can be pricey? But again, loved the video! Thanks

the beer was not cheap but i use Belgian beer for the video, i imagine you can do this with any dark beer

As a belgian I can very much confirm everyone here calls it 'stoofvlees', enlish pronunciation would be close to: stoh-vl-a-s (a like May, so vlays I think)

a bunch of people have been telling me this, and I think my big mistake is that all my research came from English speaking people. stoofvlees all the way
