It is a Four stroke engine. The first stroke is exhaust then the next stroke is intake compression of gas and magneto fire. The mag fires on every other stroke on a four stroke. 4:27

Modifications were done with a beautifully light touch and that thing sounds amazing,, I consider myself lucky to have been able to hear It run !!

@@BarryTsGarage how about putting a separate ignition system just for starting it, similar to the Fiat s76 which has 427 cubic inches per cylinder? 🤔 I understand that is a 4-cylinder but it's still impressive that they can start it by hand by cranking it backwards into the compression stroke and then activating the ignition and it fires right off

Alan's cars are absolutely fascinating. Since wooden the frame is flexible to some degree, and the starter not being physically attached to the engine is it possible that the clearance between the ring gear and the nose of the starter gear being .030" do you see a remote possibility where the two gears might come in contact when not intended? Thanks to both of you for all that goes into bringing this ' historia mechanicus' to YT.

That’s a great observation. My thought is that since the starter gear retracts when not in use, it will be okay. I’m going to ask Alan what he thinks in an upcoming interview… Thank you for your comment!

It is crazy to see how far we've come in a relatively short amount of time with this racing technology there were no racing parts available back then everything was handmade

Very nicely done. Sure he already though of this but there are much easier ways to do it especially if you have a machine shop. Leather strap belt around the flywheel like an old tractor PTO, small pulley on starter motor that pivots to tighten the belt when starting. Thaf would avoid machining the flywheel. Might need guides to keep it centered but at 200 rpm should not matter. Or heavy small diameter rubber wheel directly against flywheel and compression release. Or compression release for hand cranking and double RPM gearing on magneto but cam to keep points closed on intake stroke. Automatic compression release closes at TDC combustion when rapid handcranking made possible by compression release. Or electronic ignition, switch over to magneto after startng. Simple easily reversible mods that dont alter anything permanently.

I will definitely share your ideas with Alan!

You have to pull through two strokes of compression to fire the magneto? How does that work.? Is it a two cycle that hits every other stroke?

Magneto needs an impulse like many hand crank engines.
