I find it incredible that a station could be built basically 17 stories below ground in those days with the equipment that they had available
@MysticTransit10 ай бұрын
Same. While constructing methods & technology has advanced a lot since the early years of the subway & us being spoiled by the more modern designs of today, we cannot overlook just how amazing some of these original stations are.

It's also level with the Inwood section of Manhattan. I always love how the tunnel by Bennett Ave "sweats" in the summertime.

Actually, I find the prior 181st St. station on the A line more interesting from an architectural viewpoint, as there is a concourse suspended above the tracks running the entire length of the station, which makes it easier to switch between the uptown & downtown platforms, as well as a more pleasant walk to the station exit than along the platform itself.

This is my local station. My only wish is that they would clean the station up a bit and finish the work on the uptown platform side.

When I moved to NYC in 1999, I lived my first 3 months in Washington Hts. and this was my station. I enjoyed the station entrance on Fort Washington Ave. by Fort Tryon Park. AT the time the elevators had attendants/operators (as did the 181st Street station) and that lended a nice friendly personal touch. Also this being the 3rd station on the way downtown I always got a seat for the ride. I've fond memories and every so often I go up there to visit Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters.

@@charcasc7462 sometime around 1996 I remember when I had to take the one or nine train at the 181st Street station there was always and now we're elevator operator at that station but this was short lived when I traveled often since I still lived in Jersey and one of the main reasons it's sorta personal reasons but I'll never forget that experience.

Always love NYC subway stations without columns right next to the platform edge (at least for part of the station in this case), every time I’ve been to NYC it feels like those columns cause serious congestion when getting on/off trains, especially at busy stations like Grand Central.

Your subway system videos are very entertaining and terrifically done. Would you happen to have any information about the IND going under the grand concourse? Info like how much was the concourse torn apart to build the subway underneath? Or do you have any photographs of the concourse as the IND was being built? Thank you very much

There used to be a sign beside the staircase going down from Ft Washington to the elevators -- the sign would light up "ELEVATOR RISING" to let you know it's time to move it. I do believe the sign is still there -- just hasn't been used in a few decades. Also I remember there was a sign on a column along the tracks facing the downtown side, some promo being run by The NY World. That's going back quite a while ago in the history of newspapers!

This station brings back great memories of visiting Fort Tryon Park and The Cloisters when I was a kid. In those days, the old R10 and R1 operated on the A 8th Avenue Express. Great stop, and, in opinion, one of the most unique in the subway system. Paul Messina, New York City.

It leads to a very beautiful part of a neighbourhood which is considered, otherwise, to be "ghetto". Also, 190th St is a short walk to the south of either exit (either on Bennett Ave, resched by tunnel or on Fort Washington Ave, reached by elevator). 190th St, as it slopes sharply downhill going east of Fort Washington Ave, turns right and becomes Overlook Terrace and continues south (and sharply downhill) until 187th St and then it continues straight until 184th St where it ends. At this point, you can either turn right and enter the 184th St tunnel to the 181st St A train station or to the elevators up to Ft Wash Ave and Bennett Park or turn left to get to Bennett Ave (one block east) or Broadway (3 blocks east) or continue east from Broadway, going sharply uphill to Wadsworth Ave and beyond. This neighbourhood is all hills and cliffs (nothing like downtown or most of Manhattan).
