We had a ride some years ago with a friend in a 1910 4 seater Buick owned by Hemmings Motor News in Bennington Vt. Sitting way up in the thing and coming down a gentle hill was unnerving wondering how good the brakes were!

oh boy, my 1914 T ford....6 weeks a very very sore wrist, THEN i did learn how to start with my left hand, always only half turn up, tump NOT under the handle, first, contact off, hold choke out, 3 half turns with right hand, then, contact on, and by using the left hand, if a backfire will happen, it sure will be more likely by cold weather, the crank will kick away from your hand.....mixture nob has to be set just right, ...be sure nobody has played with the spark advance handle, ...how more you use the car how easier it starts, ...its a learning process, if it does not start, dont forget to prime again, one half turn with choke out is enough, then, try again, and, the T can drive cheap, if you use the spark advance good, kevlar linings are great, i do often drive in busy traffic, its great fun,

Just retard the spark and it never kicks. If it kicks and you have the spark retarded, it means you set the timing wrong. I have a 1917 Buick and know from experience, if it kicks your spark it too advanced.

1910 was the year the Model T passed up Buick in production numbers. In 1909 more Buicks were made than Model Ts; in 1910 almost twice as many Fords were made as Buicks.

Now this is interesting. Notice how the steering wheel is on the right hand side? All cars in the USA started off like this originally, until one manufacturer moved the gear lever to the centre of the car, and then moved the steering wheel to the left so the driver could continue to change gear with their right hand. This is really how the USA ended up driving on the right hand side of the road.

Wrapping your thumb arround the starting handle is a good way to lose a hand if the engine kicks back.
