Update based upon the most recent Amberola 1A 1st Rococo grille Herzog-built cabinets. It now appears that the Lyric grille version appeared for the first 500 [ish] Amberola 1A phonographs. Announced supposedly in time for the 1909 Christmas season - the machine was slow to actually appear due to manufacturing-related delays. Edison apparently decided to give Herzog a second chance - issuing a different design circa march-april 1010 - the so-called first Rococo grille version. This model was extremely short-lived - although it appeared as both oak and mahogany cabinets. The second style Rococo style cabinets were apparently issued beginning circa May-June 1910, now by a different well-known cabinetmaker - Pooley. It is this second Rococo grille style that became the standard model for the remaining Amberola 1A model issues [approximentely 3,600? phonographs]. The second grille style then carried into the Amberola 1B model and was kept on as the basic grille design for the first Edison A-250 disc phonographs, first appearing in 1913. Interestingly, further evidence of the rushed issue of the Amberola 1A models [Dec. 1909- May 1910] can be seen as the phonograph [designed to play two and four minute cylinders] appeared on the market with the Model L reproducer - a reproducer only capable of playing four-minute wax Amberols [the phonograph being effectively unable to play two minute wax cylinders still being issued every month up to Sept. 1912. It was only the following May, that Edison finally was able to offer the public a reproducer equipped to play both types of cylinders being sold by his company. This latter reproducer - the Model M - was the first reproducer issued with a flip-over design to bring the desired stylus into position. The smaller diameter diaphragm Model K reproducer had had two different stylii - for 2/4 minute wax cylinder types but had been designed with a turntable swivel mounted directly onto the floating weight. By the way, check out page 395 of the 1997 edition of George L. Frow's Edison Cylinder Phonograph Companion for a subtle bit of the author's humor. The circa 1888 photograph which showed Col. Gouraud dictating a cylinder has an interesting photograph sitting in front of him. The original was a photo of Thomas A. Edison. The author has "slipped" in a photograph of himself replacing that of Edison. Wonder how many of you Edison phonograph readers picked up on that sly bit of author's license.

Hello, Glad to finally see another example of this short-lived Amberola 1A model. I am fortunate to have found one - in mahogany with the Model M reproducer. George L. Frow's 1982 "Edison Cylinder Phonographs" book had suggested that this early Herzog-built 1st Rococo grille version had never actually been issued ! [this was later corrected in the author's "Edison Cylinder Phonograph companion", published in 1994]. I now suspect that the lyre grille model compromised - perhaps the first 500 phonographs (Dec. 1909-mid-1910), followed by this first rococo grille version (mid-1910 to fall 1910) model - also probably limited to approx. 500 phonographs before appearing in its third and last version with the later Rococo grille which appeared late 1910. None of the three versions [all 2/4 minute belt driven] were in production long before Model B1 appeared November 1911 [4 minute version only]. I want to inquire as to whether you had any details as to the production numbers for each of the three Model A1 types. I especially want to try and learn more regarding this very obscure 1st rococo Herzog version - as information is practically non-existent. Thanks for this video - a very rare version of a already rare model.
