I’m so excited to start this little set of minisodes where I take you through some of the projects I created off-camera during this period of self-isolation.
The first project: The American Duchess 1910s Wrap Cape! This little number has been making the rounds on Instagram and KZbin with the hashtag #adcapecult and for good reason! It’s a great looking cape and very easy to put together.
This was a great chance for me to try a few things I hadn't done before, like working with slippery lining fabric, certain kinds of hand sewing, and a look back at a totally different era of historical costume and fashion history!

I love cape and caplets. I made from repurposed outdoor fabric a 1970s cape. The rain drops slide off the fabric. Not planned but a great bonus. Keep inspiring..

Why, hello there! It's so funny....this pattern is singlehandedly responsible for me discovering at least 3 new sewing channels during the last week or so. KZbin really seems to want me, to make on, too!

Thank you to the KZbin algorithm that led me to you today! That cape looks as if it might even work for me - wheelchairs and crutches mean a lot of gorgeous things I’d like to make and wear are just totally impractical. Hope to see lots more from you in the future too!

Thanks for watching! I said this in the video, but a lot of it had to get cut for time - A thought I had about making this cape easier to wear for people with mobility issues would be for the front panels to have long ties sewn into the ends. If you made them long enough you could tie them around to the front again.

I really like your "short black and white film" wearing the cape with the umbrella and all the stuff. It was a very good acting. Very nice. Thank you for the perfum... You smell fantastic 🤩👌💖

This cape reminds me of the capes worn by the midwives on Call The Midwife. I think their cross straps are narrower, but it is very similar.

What I like about your version - like @BernadetteBanner s is that it completely covers your top. Bringing warmth and coverage to above your waist like the additional petticoats or stockings you might put on below. Being a "big gal" and seeing versions on line - I think I might add another pleated section below.

Take a look at Noelles version, “Costuming Drama”. She is also a bigger girl and discusses the issues of fitting this to someone with more boobage.

@@catzkeet4860 I did - but (don't tell her) wasn't keen about was or wasnt covered. No - down low blows to Noelle - but I like Bernadette's "fit" better

I aim to make this cape! I have just drafted the pattern and reading through the instructions am so glad I hadn't cut it out yet since it says to add seam allowance to all edges! *whew* I was wondering why the pattern looked a little small on paper!
@LizCapism

Even when I know I have to cut seam allowance I am constantly forgetting. Glad you caught it in time. That can be a real fabric waster!

It turned out beautifully! I love to see all the variation in all these capes people are making despite them coming from the same pattern, it’s like the best kind of costuming solidarity!

Thanks so much! I completely agree. Especially in this time of isolation, I bet most of them are being made with stash fabrics, which is always an adventure!

I have actually made a cape from the same original, quite a few years before the AD pattern came out. I should wear it more often, it is wonderfully swishy !

I think one of the reasons your silk warped is it might have been cut on the bias. The grid lines on the sleeve section of the pattern are not accurate to the grain of the fabric (I don't think), and the pattern piece needs to be laid tilted slightly on your fabric. I have printed out the pattern and stuck it all together and pinned it on my dress form to get an idea on how to assemble- I've heard that the back piece of the pattern is not long enough (incorrect if shoulder piece is lined up properly btw). When the uppermost notch on the sleeve head was pinned to my dress form at the highest point of the shoulder the grid lines want to skew towards the front quite a bit, so i've marked a new grain line and will see how that goes.
@LizCapism
@LizCapism 4 жыл бұрын
You're probably right. If I had bought the fabric especially for the project I would have been more precise about grain lines. Since it was a stash-only project I had to do a little improvising to get all the pieces to fit.
@emilyhunt8853

@@LizCapism I was incredibly lucky to pick up the grain line thing, and it was only because I pinned it to the dress form and realised the grid wasn't sitting straight.

I think this would be fantastic for fall! Despite being warm in the summer, the nights still get really cold in Alberta, so I'll basically be living in this over the summer too! :)

I enjoyed this so much! I'm dying to make this cape but am going to wait till fall and cooler weather. I totally get the frustration with slippery lining material. My mom actually talked about this in the video interview I filmed with her! ❤️

Fair enough! It was a great item to have made for our transition from winter/spring/summer which happens in about a week up here in the frozen North. It'll be hot in the sun and then desperately cold in the shade. Can heartily recommend!

Wool is going to be so much better. I should have paid attention to the pattern recommendations instead of going my own way. I think it would have saved me a lot of hassle.

Still on my to do list, though I already drew out the pattern and just need to decide on what fabric from my stash I will use for it. Though MAYBE I should finish one of my UFOs first, which is a green, long Cape I cut (and already fitted) 4.5 years ago... But just maybe...

So happy to see someone else who made a video about this cape! I just finished my mockup of it the other day and have my final fabrics to make it this weekend. It's helpful to see what other people have done to modify it. I am wanting to make my own video about making this cape cause... you know why not haha. I love the color you chose and the contrasting lining - very fun!

I absolutely want to make this cape! I just need to order fabric. I don't really have a stash of fabric and so I need to order for specific projects. I just can't decide what fabric I want to use for this cape. I want it to be for the in between seasons so something light but still weighty enough to make sure it flows right.. hmm.. still undecided.
@LizCapism
@LizCapism 4 жыл бұрын
The pattern recommends a lightweight wool, and I think that would be marvellous. Despite it's reputation for warmth, it is not overly hot in the summer if you get a light enough weight. It's probably WAY easier to sew with a wool as well. :) Hope you find something you like!
