Here's number 20 in this series! In this one, I'm pitting my 1911R1 .45 against a qualification course from the Lone Star State. Also, stayed tuned until the end and I'll recap all the pistols I used during these last 10 courses. After that, the voting is open and you can let me know which one of them is your favorite!

As a Texan, it may surprise people to know just how common the 1911 is here as a Law Enforcement handgun. I frequently see 1911s on LEOs from Texas Rangers to Houston Police to Harris Co sheriff down to small town and rural counties. Not as common as Glocks and Sigs and such, but still noticeable among young and old police. The Texas Rangers embraced the 1911 when it originally came out for civilian purchase in the 1910s. (And maybe it trickled down as sort if a cultural thing from there)

I found that having a 1911 in my holster was a conversation starter several times. Thankfully not the creepy 👁👄👁"What kind of gun is THAT?" people though, it was only legit gun enthusiasts that asked about it. I had some good converations over the years.

I do love this content. There is a lot to love in this round of handguns! While the revolvers are novel to watch in qualification, the 1911 is my vote for top pistol of the bunch. Classic round, time proven, game changing design, battle worn for decades. 108 years and still serving.

Thank you for these challenge videos. I was inspired to give the Texas qual a try with my 642. Went over the time limit for the reload stage by five seconds. Went over the 25 yard stage by 3.8 seconds. Kept all shots inside the zero and one down section of an IDPA target. These are great practice, especially if you shoot them cold, with no practice first. I will be shooting one of these each week and comparing my results with yours Mr. Funk Thanks again for all your hard work. I know this will help me improve my shooting.

I was a police officer for a city in the central Ohio area for many years. We were allowed to carry 1911's as long as we could sucessfully qualify with them. I carried a 1911 until late 2012. We use the same course that the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy used, but I do not know if it was state-mandated at that time. I can tell you that I had zero issues qualifying with a 1911. However, I made sure to become extremely familiar with the 1911 before I ever thought about carrying it as a duty weapon. The 1911 is more than capable in the hands of someone who is trained. Sometimes people will mention the capacity of a 1911, but I can tell you this much; reloads become much faster 🙂. There were a few stages of the course that I had to reload mid-stage. Again, I never had a problem. Full disclosure though: Several of my colleagues who were much much better shots than I was, carried 1911's and they helped train me, and I listened to them. It made a world of difference.

A thumbs up for your videos. I'm a retired Florida Law Enforcement Officer. In your Texas L.E.O. video I know you had passed, but in Florida they would have failed you. In Florida they have to be able to count holes, if you are putting bullets in the same hole they consider those misses and I know it happened to me. I would have to concentrate on spacing out my shots without going out of the scoring area. I myself shot the course in Florida with an non approved weapon, it was a 45 Colt Ruger New Vaquero and I passed. The Florida course you covered I shot in 2014 when I retired. In the beginning we fired 2 shots in 1 second at 1 yard and 2 shots in 1 second at the 3 yard line.

One of the nice things about having my shots recorded on video is that it's difficult for anyone to dispute where they struck the target. Even shots that go through the same hole will brush the paper enough to show proof of the impact. Thanks for watching!

The S&W Model 19 gets my Top Challenger vote, despite my love for the 1911 and respect for double stack .45s like the P227. The 4” .357mag was a duty staple for many American LEOs for a long time. Also, I believe your 1911 carry setup for the R1 in this video deserves an honorable mention, that’s a good looking rig.

Many, if not most, include some sort of low-light component in their qualification and/or training requirements. It's hard for me to show a low-light course of fire in a video, because you would be looking at a black screen that would only be lighted by an occasional muzzle flash :-)

@@hrfunk don't misunderstand me, I'm not being critical in a negative way. I'm just noticing that 5 of the 7 shots that cost you points were at the 25 yard line, which makes sense, since that is the longest range. But if you were working on improving your score for this test you could probably do that pretty easily by focusing on the 25 yard line. I do like seeing you shooting these qualifications. You mentioned in this video possible future “series” videos to come. You said that “you benefited from good training” as the reason you are able to perform across such a wide platform of firearms. As a suggestion then, how about a short series on the skill required to perform at this level.....sight alignment, trigger control, breathing, draw, grip......from your training. Not a long series, maybe just one or two videos. I know there are folks interested in those skills as well. Just a suggestion, HR.....

Interesting points. Paul Harrell's tests indicate that a good hollow point .45 ACP shows little propensity for overpenetration. I do agree on follow up shots, although I find .45 to be easier in the hand when fired from a low-bore axis gun like a Glock than a 125 grain .357 Magnum out of anything but a heavy revolver, and the latter seems to be a relatively popular round in civilian use. Still, we have here a choice of a favorite gun our of 10 for police use. I think I will stick with my original picks. :)
@mountainhobo
@mountainhobo 5 жыл бұрын
I am over 60, and I don't really have a preference except for manageability and reliability (machine + human). Striker-fired guns help with reliability of the human element (fewer things to go wrong in handling), just like double action revolvers (the ultimate in this respect). Then there are multiple other elements which all have to do with my limitations, like can I handle the blast in the middle of the night in my bedroom without becoming disoriented? Can I carry a certain gun in an urban environment? And so on. Alas, like you said, there is no single answer for all situations.

I will have to respectfully take the other view about targets . I feel there IS value to having a suitable system of different scoring portions . The thing is , something like a Q target ( which we currently use) is BIG , and allows really sloppy shots to gain full values . ie a hit barely hitting the love handles scores the same as a heart shot . Yeah, yeah , training budgets are tight , and the unspoken reality is the need for Depts to " efficiently qualify even the non-dedicated shooters , and create the appearance of competency . But look at the example of the B27 using T&Q scoring . The X, 10, and 9 rings count 5pts , the 8 ring 4pts, 7 ring 3pts , and outside of 7 ,but still on black outline 1 pt . It provides incentive for a small degree of accuracy , yet is still generous enough for most NSMF's to still qualify . But does give some meaning to an expert score vs merely qualified .

I'm a 1911 guy. I just have such a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to Remington..... If that was Springfield Mil Spec 1911 A1...that's my Vote. I did like the Performance of your service weapon. Going to see if they have one for Rent at Shoot Point Blank when I go this weekend. So I guess I change my vote to 1911

S&W 19 357 magnum. What happened to the model 10 in the Alabama qualification. I would've picked the S&W model 10 because it was my academy weapon and served me well on the job as did my final years with the Glock 19 gen3. Oh yeah good videos.

I actually picked the Model 10 as my favorite pistol out of the first group of 10. For this group, I'm leaving that choice up to all of you.

Looking at this Course , it is obvious this is a Legacy Course from the Revolver Era ( Not an inherent slam ) . While the times are not challenging for semiautomatics , it is fully revolver and single stack neutral . And in a hypothetical Dept in Texas that allows leway in personally owned weapons , undoubtedly they would have had plently of hold outs prefering their trusted Magnum and Big Bore revolvers, and 1911s well into the WonderNine Era . And heck , this would even let a skilled user of a J frame qualify on the Big Boy Course .

@@brianharris4275 Time conditions are too generous. This is a side effect of diminishing standards for runts, women, and fatasses. Let's call things for what they are. I use my niece as an example of a complete novice who just got her first gun and likely has not put 500 rounds down range through her gun. I have no doubt she'd qualify first go with the 3 I watched. Just impose standards again and force women, runts, and fatasses off patrol or out of the job entirely. Do a little googl;ing about the stats the USArmy tried to bury stating that 84% of women would be ejected from the army if they actually enfiorced P.T. standards on women. You can probably bet your left testicle the same is true of female cops.

You comments are only half correct. First it is different when your badge is on the line, so that adds a bit of stress. More importantly, the annual qualification shoot in most departs are relatively simple to objectively measure marksmanship in several scenarios and distances. Most departments also have more complex annual, semi-annual, or even quarterly range training days which have more complex shooting scenarios, positions, movements, reloads, etc. Where I worked we added shield and room clearing. Some departments will have training days using simunitions and force on force scenarios as part of the annual currency. But every department I know of will also shoot the relatively straight forward and scored qualification. Of course then when you get on too speciality teams it will change even more. An Emergency response team will double or triple the training sessions and scored qualifications, with dry training done almost every other day. In my military days I had the chance to work with SF guys off and on, and they did 3 to 4 live or simunition training sessions a week.
