I have some thoughts 🤔 1917 is unlike any war film I've ever seen! This movie was shot in the most stunningly beautiful way possible. Cinematographer Roger Deakins (Almost all of the Coen Brothers films, Sicario, How to Train Your Dragon 1 & 2 and Bladerunner 2049 😍) alongside director Sam Mendes (as well as the rest of the crew of course) crafted a harrowing journey that doesn't let up at all during its 2 hour runtime. You feel as if you are right alongside our main characters as they push across enemy lines to save 1,600 British soldiers from an ambush set by German soldiers. The score by Thomas Newman, who has been creating great scores for decades, has created his BEST and gloomiest score to date. I was audibly hooked thirty seconds into the film 🎶👏🎶 I can't wait to sit down with the score soon! There are a ton of a-list stars in this film but they all have very little screen time (Richard Madden was the absolute best of the bunch in my opinion) compared to Dean-Charles Chapman and George Mackay and this is where the film excells. You are left with two everyday young soldiers that are given an impossible task and you form a bond with them as they make their way across the war torn country side. There are startling, heart wrenching, suspenseful, horrifying and inspiring moments throughout the entire film and they ALL need to be experienced on the BIG screen. I often tell people to see movies on the BIG screen but I've never meant it as much as I do right now. Don't go into this film thinking you're seeing something along the lines of Saving Private Ryan or Apocalypse Now. 1917 is much more intimate compared to those films and that is why it is such a unique cinematic experience. I will be seeing this again before it leaves the theater without a doubt. Don't sleep on this film! Trust me, it's an experience unlike any you've had before at the cinema.

You have to remember this was the start of industrial war with new technologies. Most armies back then were still using cavalry tactics in the face of dug in well position machine guns. Volley fire tactics where everyone stands in a line, in front of machine gun positions. Then you have to add in the the amount of artillery used. Near Verdun over 2million shells fell on three forts held bravely by the French soldiers. Old tactics used again & again against modern killing machines. Young men left England eager to join their friends and go to war only to discover the worst of hell that none of us could ever imagine.

I hate that The Lighthouse’s only nomination if for cinematography (seriously, no acting nominations for that one?), & was unfairly bitter towards 1917 since I’d assumed it would possibly win. After seeing it...still would like for The Lighthouse to win the only category it’s nominated for, but I would understand if 1917 beats it. Shit was mind-boggling. Reminded me a bit of MGS5, where the camera is always following over Snake’s shoulder. Never seen the one-take simulation done more effectively; there was no escaping the tension, & we felt what the characters felt.

1917 felt way more real than Dunkirk. Dunkirk looked like they had a huge shortage of extras in a town that doesn't look the least believably war-torn (the beaches were extremely crowded with soldiers and Dunkirk was basically turned to rubble back in 1940). In 1917, the people in the trenches and then the offense at the end felt legit and claustrophobic with practical effects and limited CGI galore.

Yeah, I was disappointed in Dunkirk, I went in hyped but it was so lacking in scale that I couldn't believe it. It looked too ordered, no chaos, too stylistic. Having seen contemporary photos and paintings of the hundreds of ships, thousands of men and the burning town, I just couldn't buy the neatness on screen. The one shot scene from Atonement captured it far better. Shame, as a lot of effort was put into it. 1917 however, I am hopeful for. :)

Speaking in context of the movie, the real positive thing out of all that death and destruction of life was the actual mission of the two men: to save more lives from fighting in an unnecessary, losing battle. For me, that was the big "message" of the movie, and that is, the world is cruel and disgusting, but if you have a mission that is good and righteous, stick to it no matter what and to the end! Finally saw it myself. Great movie. Wish it was available back when you 2 saw it though. All because, since then, they've been cramming the "it's one continuous shot" aspect in it's promotion way too much. It became a detriment, because i was too aware of it and just kept noticing all the hidden cuts. Took me out of the movie a few times, instead of being immersing, as if you were there with the soldiers. Also, one of the dudes survived through way too many things. Most people would have been crippled since the bunker scene.
@VicenteTorresAliasVits4 жыл бұрын
Movies filmed in just 1 continuous shot or edited look like that usually show impressive camera work, but I don't always praise their cinematography. The more movement there is, the harder it is to achieve the right lighting and color palette. Since you can't push the zoom button with this technique, if you want a close-up, you have to place the camera very close to the actors' faces to the point where the frame tends to look weird. 1917 made me realize that it all depends on the camera lens and the right coordination. Sam Mendes, cinematographer Roger Deakins and their crew have created images that always look good and consistent with each other. It’s hard to say what can make this technique essential or a gimmick. I can tell you that it felt necessary here, because it’s told it real time (from the protagonist’s perspective). The only downside is that, a lot of times, the camera focus on one character at a time. We can’t see the other one’s reactions and replies. People were expecting this to be nominated for many Oscars, but were surprised when one of its nominations was for Best Original Screenplay. The only nomination in that category the movie had gotten before was at the WGA, and it seemed like it happened because other movies were deemed ineligible. That made me assume this would be a movie that only excels in technical aspects. Now, I agree with that nomination. I wouldn’t have been immersed without a good story or characters. Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns present us with 2 soldiers (Schofield and Blake) that we root for and want to follow along, as well as a series of vignettes full of suspenseful and touching moments. There were a couple of moments I was able to predict, but they were the minority. There are even some details that look meaningless but cleverly pay off later in the plot. 9/10 *Spoilers ahead* A good script is one where you unexpectedly don’t have the heroes achieve their goal. A better script is one where the heroes only partly achieve their goal. Here, Schofield and Blake have to bring a message to another regiment (that Blake’s brother is a part of) warning them about a trap. Schofield does deliver the letter (how is in perfect state if he fell into a river?!), but after a lot of soldiers had already been sent to attack. Also, Blake was stabbed to death by the German soldier he was trying to save (cartoonish characterization of a villain much?). His brother *is* alive, but because he survived said trap, not because Schofield stopped him. All of this makes the drama much more satisfying.

I give a pass to any adventure film that is done well. The one shot stuff brings a certain intamacy, immediacy and surrealism. It is helpful to shoot this during world war 1, when there is less machinery, technology, so that it increases this feeling of individual surrealism. This movie is better than Dunkirk because Dunkirk turns into a farce as our hero goes from one improbable disaster to another. Mendez shows restraint.

My rating for 1917: *Better than Sex!!* (like a 10/10 equivalent.) A war movie that sticks out to me - immense artistic merit, transcends the generic war trope and actively makes you beat out of your heart... That simple story and oneshot could have been just another gimmick, but no. Sam Mendes actively fixates himself as the thing you keep on dreading as you expect just another war movie. One of the best war movies, period. I know there's someone out there who will give a Fuck You, but deep down they know it's just them walking out with PTSD. Another Better than Sex that I recommend: Der Untergang. More war movies I've seen: War Horse (Matinée), The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (also a Matinée)

I've seen 1917 and the movie is great! For the first 30 mins...

Pray tell, what about it makes it not great after the 30 minute mark? I thought there were a few spots (ever so minor spoilers) where characters were resting when things still felt urgent, & where a character managed to avoid danger to a slightly unrealistic degree, but none of that made the second or third acts any less impactful for myself.

I'm sure I would like this movie more than Nolan's Christopher Nolan Attack of the White British Clones... Only have to follow like 2 guys, this movie could be cool

I'd say the reason why WW1 was so awful was because of technology. You had more accurate weapons, machine guns, chemical warfare and all that shit.

Have they not played any mmo’s they would’ve been more successful if they had a squad... I wonder if this really happened how they say it did but those were trippy times back than lol

The movie was great...from what I was able to watch. The “one shot” look gave me motion sickness and I never get motion sickness. Although it added to the story, it killed it for me.

Gotta laugh when talking about brutality and people who breathe just to hurt others - coping mechanism? I generally dislike movies with a story set in the war zone...did watch IB with Christoph Waltz and Brad Pitt - the only one!LOL! 1917 seems like Frodo and Sam trying to save lives..."It's a man on a mission movie" Looks a worthy one. Enjoyed your review.
