It's sad when Wild Thornberrys explains how and why the main character has talking animal abilities in the OPENING credits BETTER than this movie(She was given the ability by a shaman with magical abilities just an FYI). 29:04 that's a clear pic of Dolittle with his hand up the dragon's ass. No way the scales at the bottom of the screen could pass for a dragon head. Why didn't the studio at least try cropping it to only Dolittle's reaction if they wanted to pass that as dragon breath and not a fart? They could've settled for "the dragon has something lodged in its throat, so it wants to breathe fire but it can't" and have that be the problem. On the one hand it'd be convenient to leave the thing stuck because the dragon can't kill anyone just by breathing really hard, on the other it's a vital defense mechanism. Dolittle fixes the issue, and the movie gets a nice little moral about how it's unethical to deprive wild animals of their natural weapons (or the body parts they'd need to use it) just to make them easier for humans to deal with (see also: declawing cats or removing the glands out of skunks).

You know, this is sad. I liked the Eddie Murphy movies but I was sort of hopping that for this version they would do a fanatical take of the original book and Martin is right; they could have gone the Paddington route and had something that was just PERFECT for families but instead they went the easy route with CG animals that spout quotes from things that don't even exist in the time period the story is taking place in. But then again, once I saw who the producers were the warning was already out.

I have the original books, and it is my hope maybe someday someone will make a faithful adaptation. Possibly BBC. There has never been a good adaptation of Dr. Doolittle. Rex Harrison simply made his Henry Higgins character as the Doctor, the Eddie Murphy film had nothing to do with the books, and all I needed to see were the previews of this version to know I'd be avoiding it like the plague.

I made the mistake of assuming RDJ was going to finish up as Ironman and go and do a small dramatic role and go for that oscar kind of performance and show us the chops but to turn around and do something like this is a weird choice. If he wanted to go straight into another big budget movie he should've came out with Sherlock 3 .
