@@scotttchviski6706 In the context, "Could" or ''Would you mind'' followed by please would definitely sound more polite than "can" (while waving and pointing your finger) to a native speaker since it is less direct and more deferential. He was being officious and likely makes a habit of it. Obviously, Alfie could have declined .

He asked - 'Sir, can you put your mask down so I can see you?' - it was a request, which could have been declined. There's no irony here. It would have been ironic if the security guard was wearing a mask, or enforcing a policy to compel people to wear masks.
