1920 was an interesting year for Ruth. He actually started off horribly. In his first 18 games he hit .210 with just 2 home runs. The final 124 games he played he hit a staggering .401 with 52 home runs in just 396 at bats. That's insane. His slugging average was .922 and onbase .560 during that stretch.

Player uniform numbers didn't come into use until 1929, when Ruth was 34 yrs old and three quarters of the way through his playing career. There's been much more video of Ruth on the net in the past handful of years than over more than a half century on TV. Obviously, various sources had collectively quite a bit of film on Ruth, especially after he came to NY, media capital that it's been, but it apparently wasn't available, or readily available even to news outlets prior to the net and uploading sites like Youknowwhotube.

Notice the catcher is not fully seated. Back then a high strike at the letters was called. They pitched Babe high. Even today high strikes are hard to hit. Today with faster speeds the strike zone is the knees to the belt buckle.

1925 was Ruth's worst year. That was the year of his notorious "bellyache heard around the world," which took him away from baseball for two months. After he came back from that, he was pretty much out of control -- that year, if no other time, his lifestyle got the best of him; he was out of shape, probably hung-over a lot of the time, and he played horribly. That was the year Miller Huggins finally lowered the boom on him and suspended him. That winter, Ruth, realizing that his career was in jeopardy, began going to Artie McGovern's gym in New York and working out. By the next year he was in the best shape of his life, and he stayed that way until his final years with the Yankees.

There are also many many records of players from those eras throwing 400+ feet in distance competitions. Which is still an impressive feat today. Hell, the guy who holds the record for the longest throw ever did it in 1958. Oh yeah I forgot to mention that Ruth took 3 tests in 1921. Tje one test showed motor control, the other showed bat speed, and the final test showed reflexes. Pujols took the same series of tests in 2008 with the same methods. Ruth ended up crushing Pujols in the motor control and reflexes. Pujols swung an 31 oz bat 86 mph. Ruth swung a 54 oz bat at 75 mph (league average today is 70.) So even though Pujols swung the bat 11 mph faster than Ruth, Ruth's 75 mph was more impressive than Pujols 86 mph. If Ruth had a 31 oz bat, it's estimated he could have swung the bat over 90 mph. I also have no clue where your getting "fat players" from. I cant even name 3 fat players from 1915 meanwhile I can name over 10 from today's game. And Ruth doesn't even count because he was 6 feet 2, 215 pounds. Trout is the same height as Ruth but trout weighs almost 20 more pounds than Ruth. Does this mean Trout is fat now?

The falling out between Ruth and Gehrig occurred circa 1932, when Gehrig's mom made a remark that Ruth's wife dressed her own daughter from her first marriage better than she dressed Ruth's daughter from his first marriage. Ruth told Gehrig to muzzle his mom, and the two players stopped speaking. I have read that Gehrig's wife (in reality far from the prim girl played by Teresa Wright in "Pride of the Yankees") had indeed "known" the Babe before she met Gehrig, but that was not the cause of the fued.
