I think they kept calling Babe those slurs because he interacted with African American people, including ballplayers. Like N lover, N this N that. I say this because I saw the movie "42" and saw a lot of people would call those things to people who interacted with Jackie Robinson. That was a movie, so I would imagine it was a lot worse in real life. That's my guess.

A friend 12 years my senior (I'm 60) told me this after talking to her about the speculation concerning his ethnicity. My friend's dad played in the Nergro Leagues, and when he was active in the Leagues as well, Ruth was seriously considering playing in the Leagues as well. He changed his mind later.

@guyfaux3978

His mother and father were descended from German immigrants. His maternal grandmother was a prostitute and it was conjectured that Babe's mother may have been the daughter of her mother and some sort of hi-yella black man. Babe looked into the matter and concluded that his mother was the child of his grandmother and the grandmother's pimp, who was a German-American hoodlum, not black to any degree.

Just to let yall know a lot of mixed people passed as white back then so they wouldnt be mistreated like black people. I have people in my own blood line who chose to live as white people back in the 1920's 30's. You would be surprised how common this was. My grandparents never would talk about it. Lot of older black folks in our families didnt tell us the horror stories they went through. I dont think they wanted to re-live those nightmares. Racism ruined a lot of lives a lot of families. This is American history. Can't deny or run from it. Just dont repeat it.

I've heard that there was a lot of people that thought this back in the day and i tried explaining to my friends about it but they didn't believe me. I could see how one could make that conclusion with his features but it's not uncommon for regular white folk to have those features either. There might be some African or Latin American blood somewhere in him. That's not impossible but he's definitely, overwhelmingly white and his mother didn't have an illegitimate child. He's copy and pasted from his father. You can't argue that at all. Anyways, European facial features vary greatly depending on region and some features can be considered more African. He probably has ancestry closer to the Mediterranean. Maybe more Eastern European genes, idk. Features aren't always a good way to judge race. I have an aunt that looks South East Asian. We're all white in my family. She just has narrow eyes and bigger lips. Our brains are just really good at pattern recognition. It doesn't mean that the pattern is indicative of race.

I think it was much less sinister if you read about it--and it is one of the reasons why Jackie Robinson wasn't really "a hero", more just a figurehead. For starters, World War II was the catalyst for the color line being broken, and it is neved talked about. Pretty much every abled body American had fought either the Germans or the Japanese, and they had seen the ugliest sides of racism, or lost someone to those ideology. This caused everyone to reevaluate their old ideals of race. It wasn't that Branch Rickey was some quaker looking to make a point for the good of society. He was just a Moneyball practitioner for his time who wanted to win, and he was like that even into the 1950s. He saw a talent pool that wasn't being used or was undervalued, and he wanted to improve his team. Having Jackie Robinson, or nine Jackie Robinsons would help any team. Second, Jackie Robinson was hardly the only athlete to experience bad words being hurled at him. If you could see baseball in the 1900s, you would be shocked. It was largely a game for poor Irish and immigrant ruffians who often brawled in the middle of games. They said horrible things to each other, and that was just par for the course. Ethnic slurs were always fair game, for EVERYONE, because, you know, up until about five minutes ago, that was the way males bonded with each other. It certainly wasn't something that kept a man like Jackie Robinson up at night. Ironically, everything you've read about Ty Cobb is probably untrue. He was the son of a lawyer who defended blacks in Georgia, and being well-educated, was probably less racist than most of his counterparts. He certainly wasn't the avowed racist Al Stump--a pure charlatan--portrayed him to be later in life. Ruth simply had the features that people associated with blacks of that time. The big lips, the large ears, the rounded face. It became an easy way to make fun of him for a competetive edge. Hell, that's why they called him Babe, he had the rounded face one associated with the name "Babe". It was actually a pretty common nickname for anyone that didn't have WASP-y, defined features. If you look at Ruth, he looks exactly like his father, who was white. As for the thumbnail picture you reference at the beginning of the show, I think it is much more likely that the people are backed away from him because photo ops of the day were much harder to come by, and also, the journalists wouldn't want the aperture crowded with other people in the photographs. It's not because he was "black".

He might have had less fans, but he would have been allowed to play just the same. When the player was clearly black, the "Chief" was banned from baseball.

If Babe Ruth was really an alien from another planet, he would maintain his status as an American icon, but all of his baseball statistics/achievements/records would be disqualified under the Superman principle -- there is a reason why individuals with superhuman abilities of any kind are not allowed to compete against the rest of us mere mortals… It’s just not fair. That said, an exhibition game featuring nothing but comic book characters wielding special abilities and super powers is something I would absolutely pay to watch. During Ruth's time being part of the Klan was not something that one hid. 4:47 Also, Adolph enthusiasts were en vogue by the time of his retirement. The US had open diplomatic relations with the Nazis as they were the ruling party of Germany at the time. In fact, the world wouldn't come to hate Adolph for another 4 years.

There was a book written by Roger Creamer in the seventies titled, "Babe: The Legend Comes to Life", there is a picture of his father tending bar that appears in the book (I believe it was taken in 1912), Babe Ruth is the spitting image of his father.

Because he was freak in terms of size and hand eye coordination…immediately the haters came up with excuses. But, think about it, they’re actually arguing that blacks should be allowed in baseball, in the 1910s…I’m not saying I believe that Ruth was a mix blood …I’m just saying, the accusation is ridiculous.

When I first saw a picture of Babe Ruth when I was 7 years old, I thought he was black. He had a lot of the same features as my black family. Then I saw a color picture of him and said, "oh nvm". Fast forward to me being in my mid 30s with two babies that came out white with straight/curl non nappy hair(white wife, take that racist). My eldest has started to turn olivish color, which is the color that Babe was in that color picture. So maybe he was mix race?

The reason he was taunted with slurs/nicknames/put downs etc. was because when you "push someone's buttons", "get their goat" etc. you can emotionally manipulate that person. Think of how muhammad ali used to verbally taunt his opponents. When was Ruth was taunted he became incensed, furious, upset etc... which would effect his performance negatively..!

@@Athlete1990 really? We’re going to resort to that. If you are going to defend usage of that word you were obviously incapable of adult conversation in the first place. Speaking of my mother yeah she’s been to Boston and she seen how racist it was and I had to tell her that that’s just how the city is. And her 40 years that she’s lived in this country. She has never been treated the way she’s been treated in Boston solely on the darker complexion of your skin. I don’t expect much from you, Boston people. So go ahead and defend this worm and insult peoples mothers. I guess the Fortnite profile picture is just too intimidating to have an adult conversation. You sack of poop.

@@Athlete1990 really? We’re going to go to juvenile things like talking about people’s mother? I guess if you can’t talk like an adult, you have to resort to things like that.
