I love how old stuff were created reparable, not like newer ones that everything is punched together.

Back then nobody could afford anything, these well made items were expensive. most simply had next to nothing their whole lives.

Planned obsolescence... in a way it's a sad sad thing..
@genk9798

It depends on whether the stuff is high quality or low quality. High quality is always easier to repair, whether old or new, and nornally has better quality control, so less faulty parts needing to be replaced. I just made myself think about the modern classic book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" with this talk of "fixing thigs" and the concept of "quality" 😆 I guess I know what I'll be reading over the holidays!

In part there is a selection bias at work: Only the well made stuff or the rarely used stuff survived until today. 100 years ago there also existed cheap products that simply dont exist anymore because they got trashed.

That *click* sound when an old screw is being taken out for the first time in decades is sooooo satisfying! Also, I was hoping to see Avril enjoy the heat of the restored product in these cold days, but maybe next time! :)

I love the fact that this is a match to the antique wood stove, also from the 1920s. I am impressed by the restorations of both and am tempted to search for these online, as well as any other matching "pieces".

I've always liked that green enamel. It's great on so many stoves and heaters. Tiles too. I have a 40 tray hardware organizer in my garage. Not fancy, in fact cheaply made. It's the roughly 80-100 years of nuts, bolts, and misc small fittings in it that I enjoy. There are square nuts like those on your heater. I don't use them, but I have used a screw or spring over the decades. This was in my grandfather's Fix-it Shop. He made extra money repairing lawn mowers and chain saws. He would also sell extra firewood. He had a roughly built saw blade, about 18", belt driven with an electric motor he got ahold of. One visit to my grandparents stands out, and that's the one where he had cut a mound of firewood about 25' at the base and about 10' high. That and the shed he stuffed for their use over winter. This was back about 1968-1975.

That looks really nice now that you cleaned it up. I like the black you did by hardening the metal pieces. Goes nice with the white insert. Looks like your co-worked decided to just lay on the chair, by the heat, and supervise only today! Dont blame him, it's cold outside.

The level of detail on that little heater is a lost art form. It was so beautifully crafted. It’s a shame nothing nowadays is crafted to this level of detail. I still use gas heaters in my house this would be a fine piece.
