When I moved to L.A. in 1973 the Garden Court apartment building was still there on Hollywood Blvd., fading into genteel decrepitude. I had a friend who lived there and visited frequently, taking in the wood paneling and decorations. Gone now, since the mid 1970s. BTW, the bank building at the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland is still there and is now known as the Max Factor building.

Min. 3:27 Citizens National Trust and Savings Bank...I just bought a signed check by Rudolph Valentino, dated May 11, 1921, drawn on this bank...Hollywood branch!!!! Now I know where it was located...next to Grauman's ...Egyptian? So cool to see the bank no matter where it was...

You have a signed check of Valentino? May I ask where you found it and how much it cost?
@secretariatgirl42493 жыл бұрын
@@danielhirschberg876 Yes, I do. It came up on EBay, offered by a Swiss collectible dealer. It is dated May 11, 1921 and is made out to Murphy Motors. I paid about $1500 for it. It was accompanied by a vintage, 8 X 11 print of a photo by Henry Waxman. It is fully certified. If you go to my channel you will a lot of turtle videos, but I have done a video about this check based on my blog post. The full blog post is on my site ...the address is in the description of the video....I saw another check to Dunn Motors, but it has a stamp in the payee line and there are cancellation marks through the signature. They are asking about the same price for that one. However, it is not as nice as the check I have which is made out fully by Valentino...in green ink!

I wish the movie studios would have had the foresight to capture more of the surrounding country side with it's farms and orchards, very little footage exists to actually show just how beautiful So Calif., use to look. Orange groves, walnut orchards, open fields that would bloom brilliant yellow from the mustered plants in the spring. The people who live in the housing tracks where these fields use to be have absolutely no clue about the history of the area.

Yes, even the earliest footage of building Disneyland they only mention about the orange groves that were cleared to make way for the magic kingdom (and parking, i think 160 acres altogether), the filming seems to start when the lovely groves had been cleared away!

The Egyptian Theatre has John Gilbert in Four Walls on the marquee. That was released in August of 1928.

The restoration tried to keep to it's original detail with some changes. It's still really nice.

I think the castle-like structure at 5:03 is Wolf's Lair. Built by Milton Wolf, who was one of the people that created the Hollywoodland subdivision, in 1928. It's still there and I believe it's for sale. If anyone has an few extra million.

Very interesting to see an appliance store in the Outpost Building at 3:18. Aren't all the businesses in that stretch of Hollywood Bl around the Chinese Theater tourist-oriented now?

Are there any 1920s films that show any of the Los Angeles and Hollywood radio stations at the time, inside and outside, on the air, antennas, etc.? Maybe KFWB, KNX, KFI, etc??
