I love that this wasn't some yardsale find for $10, even though those are fun to watch, but this is a family who all participated in the generous and thoughtful experience of mom treating dad to something special and meaningful. And for it to become the revered and respected piece that it has become is almost the icing on her love for him. From the humbleness of the son I would assume it had greater value to the father than money, because it came from her. And I do love that painting!

Is it a win though? Sentimental value being overruled by cash value is not always a good thing. Having lost both parents myself, there are items they owned that I still have because they are special to me, but I am not sure how I would feel if someone offered my a huge wad of cash to part with them.
@TheErockaustin

@@Karma-qt4ji I think that is part of the tears. He instantly knows he's going to sell it, it is too much money. So there is some sadness there. It could also be relief that it wasn't a lower number he would agonize over... would he sell it for $10k? $50k? Maybe some pride too, that something that was so dear to his parents and him is valued.

That is such a beautiful reaction. It’s no nice to see that the money wasn’t really the thing and that he loved it for the memories it held.

WOW! you can tell right off the bat, this is a gem! It's extraordinary how he painted the water in direct sunlight and in shadow to create the visual constrast to tell the story.

I love his first reaction was to think how happy his dad would be to know how popular these illustrations are, not the $125k price tag on it. 😁❤

NO! if you ever come by old objects that you think might need cleaning don’t. In almost all cases damage and devaluation.

@@Simonofcalifornia I'm not suggesting a DIY. The painting obviously needs the attention of a professional conservator to clean it. Some objects should always be left in 'as found' condition. Not this. Professional conservation of this painting would enhance the value.

5$ a week for about 2 years is only 520$... that's too cool. That's a great lesson about saving and buying something worthwhile for an investment.

In the 60s, that's around $4500 today. Quite the investment. This warmed my heart and made me shed a tear.

That was a lot of money back then, I dont think it was a good investment, you could have invested in better returns for that money but it gave the dad a lot of pleasure and that s why it was worth every dime.
@infrasleep

@@SuperBenette Exactly ; you should buy a painting because you like it and it gives you pleasure. If it ends up being worth a fortune or nothing that's irrelevant (a bonus if it is worth a bit I admit !)

$4500 in the 1960's may have been 1/4 of a $20,000 house. In the 70's, the price of a car. But $125k today is still a good invetment. Invest in what you enjoy!

The painting is really beautiful. It's a good nostalgia of bygone times. The price truly merits its beauty.
