Absolutely LOVE this! I crossed this bridge probably more than a hundred times as a kid in the 60's walking to "Grandma's House" on Charlotte Street. My first 12 years of life were spent living just off River Road between the St Patrick Street Bridge and the Cummings Bridge. Thanks so much once again, Jean for your wonderful work! :)

That area looked so beautiful near Cummings Bridge. It looked more like countryside land.

I believe there was originally a streetcar track on the bridge that was never used, but was put there in case Eastview ever decided to have a streetcar on Montreal Rd. I recall reading that the track was removed around 1945, when there were repairs made to the bridge.

You can certainly see the streetcar tracks in some photos at the very beginning and end of the video. Sadly they were never used and would have required connecting track work at RIdeau/Charlotte and a loop somewhere in Eastview. Had streetcars along Montreal Rd been implemented, rather than buses, Eastview/Vanier might have had much stronger economic development.

Crossed this bridge a thousand times and never knew the time it was built. What would have been the means of crossing the river before this?

There was another bridge just to the south. See facebook.com/LostOttawa/posts/original-cummings-bridge-1896/453534601412436/ or ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/cummings-island-a-former-commercial-hub-now-sits-empty

I believe a toll bridge went from Eastview to the island (where the Cummings family had a general store and carriage-making business) and then to Ottawa. The city of Ottawa bought the island so they could by-pass it and build a better bridge. My grandmother, Agnes (Gussie) Cummings, grew up on the island. Her husband, Ned Charleson, was killed in WW1. She raised my father and aunt in a little cottage just east of the bridge on the Montreal Road. I have many happy memories of visits with her there.
