I think that the hood ornament is supposed to be the French explorer, La Salle. The Greenfield Village show sounds like fun! The village and the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation are both great. We visited a couple of years ago (and took a ride in a Model T). Enjoy it!

The first time I ever heard the name LaSalle was when I was a kid and it was a part of the lyrics in the 'All in the Family ' theme song. It was years later that I saw one. This a really nice looking automobile, love the color. In the scenarios though, I'd choose the Hup in the first, and the LaSalle in the second. 😎

Beautiful LaSalle in one of my favorite colors blue. Mr Earl and team had good taste styling cars. First pick, 28 Franklin, second 28 LaSalle. That Pontiac speedster in the background looks interesting. Know the song from my high school days, just cant figure the artist, and lyrics.

What a great looking V8, hard to get one's head around the fact that the exhaust manifolds exit over the top of the engine. Looks like running off the manifolds it has a heat exchange setup to warm the carb.

28 LaSalle 28 Hudson That is a gorgeous automobile that looks immaculate. As much as I love the bright work on the older vehicles like this the classics. I found it really refreshing to see the grill painted the body color on that LaSalle. I think those map pockets in the doors I really where the inclement weather curtains would be stored. It seems very strange to have the light switches actually mounted on the steering wheel I'm wondering if those are for the advance and retard and the switches on the dash or for the lights? I like the dash layout on this car it didn't look super high-end or plush but it looks elegant and functional. Overall it's just a great looking vehicle thanks for reviewing this one I really liked it.
@What.its.like. Жыл бұрын
Yeah I totally agree the dashboard layout was a little bit interesting especially with the spark advance being on the dash.. instead of the steering wheel I would’ve switched it I would’ve put the headlights there and I would’ve put the spark advanced on the steering wheel. I didn’t even think about curtain storage but yeah it does great place to put the curtains in the side pocket.
@carlmontney7916 Жыл бұрын
@@What.its.like. I'm not 100% sure that that's where the curtain storage is but if you think about it if you're going to have to snap in the curtains and you hit an unexpected rain storm or nasty inclement weather it would make sense to have the curtains right there where you could quickly get at them and snap them in place.

Hi Jay!: Ahhh the LaSalle! The GM companion makes were SO interesting! You can see why the LaSalle was the second longest in production. GM struck a GOLD MINE when they hired Harley Earl! Still say he is probably the most influential auto designer of his time. GM would have been NO WAY as successful without him. Back to the companion make story. I find it quite interesting that the LaSalle and Viking were both V-8's while the Pontiac and Marquette were sixes. Both the LaSalle and Viking had very interesting V-8 engines in layout. The updraft carb between the banks on the LaSalle is Interesting! The Viking had a similar system, but used cast finned intake units on each bank with a connecting piece to which the carb was mounted. In the brochure they called it a "down draft" system, but the carb was still an updraft!! Pretty neat! WYR#1 if the body style was less stodgy I would for sure pick the Franklin! #2 Have to go Auburn here. But I will state that the LaSalle was a VERY important car for GM at the time, with the Pontiac only slighty less important as things turned out.

La Salle's place in the GM family, although great cars, it might be considered a Cadillac with a lisp. With mechanical brakes, which needed regular adjustment, they liked to rear-end other cars! lol Now, you might wonder why Cadillac V8's didn't have overheating problems like the Ford V8, as they were both flatheads. Well, it's the method of exhaust. With "L" head flatheads, the intake and exhaust vales were side by side, normally on the inside of the "V". Ford chose to channel it's exhaust through the cylinder banks, heating both the cylinders and the coolant. With two separate water-cooling system, the Ford V8 cylinder banks didn't share water with each other before sending it to the radiator. Because of this the two cylinder banks couldn't equalize their temperatures. Now Cadillac, being a first one on the block with new technology, company would seek out solutions to problems before they occured. Hence, Cadillac realized the valves were next to each other sothe intake and exhaust manifolds should both be bolted on next to their respective valves. Though a little bit cumbersome to work on and it is OK to pre-heat the air-fuel mixture before entering the combustion chamber, it ISN'T OK to pre-heat the coolant(except in especially cold weather). Got snow and ice? The Ford V8 is the one you want.

For WYR, I would pick the Franklin, then the LaSalle. I have to say, that hood ornament was nice. But I wonder what it was like driving those cars during the rain or during the winter using those curtains. On the other hand, during the summer it was probably a good time.

WYR1: Franklin The La Salle was at the forefront of the introduction of styling with model year changes as a major force in American car manufacture, through Harley (Duke of) Earl, but the Franklin is just such an oddball. The LaSalle was intended to be a "Poor Man's Cadillac" but it was still a very expensive car for the times. In fact, the Cadillac Seville almost got the LaSalle name. (As a historic tidbit, the LaSalle was a favorite of the Purple gang.)

Theoretically, If GM choose similar brand hierarchy as Rolls Royce and Bentley (Rolls Royce affluent and reach while Bentley - sportier and sophisticated) - they could keep and save La Salle. GM had big enough pocket to keep the brands during the 30' depression years. But in the end of the 30', La Salle models were a dress-down version of Cadillac and they lose their identity compare to Buick and Oldsmobile (which ~60 years later happened also to Oldsmobile).
@n.mcneil4066 Жыл бұрын
The austerity of the 30's affected the La Salles. Their wheelbases were shortened & a 248cid straight 8, likely Oldsmobile sourced, was offered. In 1937 Lasalle went back to a downsized Cadillac V8, 322cid, until her demise after 1940.
