The Passion of Joan of Arc is a master piece of cinema, detailing the story of Joan's last days. Thought is pioneering use of the close up an an amazing performance from Maria Falconetti, it reviles something deeper about the human condition.
The Close up has been used throughout cinema history, in films like 12 Angry Men and Saving Private Ryan to change how the audience feels emotionally.

This film was a big part of getting me deeper and deeper into film. I never even really thought of watching silent films, until I accidentally flicked the tv into a channel where this movie was playing. I was instantly intrigued, and ended up watching the whole thing. Since then I've watched & loved silent films, but La Passion is still my favourite.

Those close ups of Joan of Arc are the type of thing that never leave you. Some of the most powerful stuff ever put to silent film. I'm a bit disappointed you didn't bring up Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy though. I feel that those films utilize close ups fantastically. The tension is amplified tremendously through them. Every sweat drop, every shift of focus from the character's eyes, every twitch of the finger on the gun's trigger. That, mixed with Morricone's amazing score makes for some unforgettable duels.

As someone who had to watch this in university, it got really uncomfortable, not because it’s bad, but because it’s raw. You may understand that most film use close ups and why, but watching a full movie movie almost entirely shot in them. It’s difficult to watch Joan and her pain so close up, because when it cuts, it doesn’t cut away it cuts to a different close up, it forces you to sit there with the pain.

Well done, Charlie. While you're at it, take a critical look at Dreyer's 'Day of Wrath' and perhaps, also, Abel Gance's 'Napoleon' from about the same year.

Are you gonna talk about any of Mizoguchi's great works: 1936 - Osaka Elegy 1936 - Sisters of the Gion 1939 - Story of the Last Chrysanthemums 1946 - Utamaro and his Five Women 1948 - Women of the Night 1951 - Oyu Sama 1952 - Saikaku Ichidai Onna 1953 - Ugetsu Monogatari 1953 - A Geisha 1954 - Sansho the Bailiff 1954 - Chikamatsu Monogatari 1954 - The Woman in the Rumor 1956 - Street of Shame For goodness sake if you are gonna feature any Kurosawa films then perhaps consider Kurosawa's very own words delivered at Mizoguchi's funeral: "...in the death of Mizoguchi, Japanese film lost its truest creator."

Joan of Arc was an interesting film. It seems to have been the culmination of the achievements of silent cinema, yet the close-ups being interrupted by intertitles that state the dialogue seem to yearn for sound.

What do you mean, "almost" spiritual intensity? Dreyer use the word "passion" in the title for a reason - The execution of innocence by those who "know not what they do" but do it to retain power. It is up there with Bach's settings of Christ's passion. This film is a spiritual as film gets.

This is video contains fantastic information, but it would be nice to have trigger warnings ahead of time that we're going to be watching one extremely violent moment after another just to illustrate film theory about a film that contains nothing remotely as gruesome. Tbh, no one should be so desensitized to that level of violence that it works as passive background visuals to a filmmaking analysis narration that is not really about the violence whatsoever

If there is truly justice, the bishops, priests and church leaders who burned Joan of Arc long ago should be all burning in hell to this very day, almost 600 years later.

I'm sorry... but I pretty much disagree with everything you said: the movie has some great establishing shots, in fact the first shot (after the CU of the book) is an establishing; same goes for the whole movie: establishing of the cell, establishing of the chamber of tortures etc. The movie starts with a text that explains the context of the movie, so that we could follow even if we didn't know the story upfront. Tha camera actually moves A LOT throughout the film, especially for that period: it pans for 180°, it tracks, it tilts, it pushes in and out... and the shots with numerous people are many. Falconetti's performance is memorable because of her... all the CU did was to enhance it, but it still would have been memorable if played in MS, on the other hand the CU of a bad actress would just show how bad she is. I understand the romantic idea of the director making the whole movie by himself and making it great thanks to his strong vision (and Dreyer shurely had a strong vision) but a director's collaboratores are those who ultimately make the picture. Do you see my point?
