1928 Victor Sjöström - "The wind" (visual highlights)

Succesful Swedish actor/director Sjöström started working in Hollywood in 1924 using the anglicised name Victor Seastrom. "The Wind" was his last silent film. Sjöström turned out to be uncomfortable directing talkies and soon returned to Sweden, where he would much later star in Igmar Bergman's "Till glädje" (To Joy) and "Smultronstället" (Wild Strawberries).
The wind that plagues Lillian Gish in this film was mostly created by the propellers of eight aircraft.
The music in this short impression was made by Alessandro Marenga as a score for a 2007 DVD version of the film.

Can the Criterion Collection consider releasing this at some point now that this movie is ninety years old? I love to imagine what the supplements would look like.

Whatever the exact criteria for Criterion Collection releases may be, it is probably relevant that in general u.s. copyrights expire 95 years after publication.

@@magicalmotionmuseum The movie if it has renewed its copyright notice, would have its copyrights expire in 2024. But not many movies from the ear had the copyright notices in order.

Criterion is pretty likely to release it, but even with it being public domain they would likely still license it from Warner Brothers and work directly with them on the restoration. they did this for Buster Keaton's The Cameraman - also a former MGM property now owned by WB and split the restoration costs with them. considering they've released Sjostrom's The Phantom Carriage, it's highly likely they'd be interested in this. I'd love to see them go all out with the supplements and multiple scores, but truly just having the movie restored and on a disc (something that has never legally happened anywhere in the world) would be enough for me. but it definitely deserves great supplements

No, but the original 1928 Vitaphone score has apparently been screened in the last decade or so. Reportedly, it was originally put together somewhat hastily as an afterthought when synched sound became popular. From the video description (if you click "more"): "The music in this short impression was made by Alessandro Marenga as a score for a 2007 DVD version of the film."
