Harold Lloyd in Feet First (1930) - The Climbing Scene, Part 1

This is a scene from Harold Lloyd's second talking picture. Having thrilled audiences with his death-defying climb in the 1923 silent film Safety Last, Lloyd decided to recreate the iconic moment, this time with sound. It's interesting to hear his various grunts, gasps and screams as he scales the skyscraper. Don't know about you, but the sound effects made it seem much more real - and much more frightening - to me. Silent or talking, this feat is amazing!

Wow.... my body parts get sucked into me every time I watch a Lloyd performance..... He generated such immediate audience empathy for the character every time. This guy was the best, so was his director and cameraman.

I'd not heard of Harold Lloyd until recently. I discovered him here, on KZbin. This film was imaginative, well filmed, and very funny! 👍😂 I read about Harold Lloyd on Wikipedia. His accident to his hand. A fire at his massive house. His wife dying two years before him, and his son just months after him. Looking at these films, it's a wonder he made it to old age, dying from prostate cancer in 1971, when I was just nine years old! RIP, Harold Lloyd. You were a brave and very funny man!

Very clever movie-making. The backdrop shows the intersection of Broadway and 10th St (renamed Olympic Blvd in 1932) looking northeast. That "United Artists" theatre sign is still there today (20 Jan 2024). Theatre was built in 1927.

Everyone who saw that movie wondered the same thing (unless they had their heads up their ass). Apparently there was no trick photography used. They made a structure on top of a tall building and shot the scenes there. Even if he fell it would only be a few feet, but it's convincing as the scenery in the background is all real. Amazing stuff, this guy was an innovator for sure. It hard to even watch, a blend of cringe and hilarity.

Instead of rattling on about trick shots and special effects Harold was a stunt performer and the same safety features are used by modern stuntman like Vic Armstrong today. This took nothing away from Harold's athletic skills and raw courage he displayed. Like Buster Keaton who broke his neck performing , Harold blew his fingers off with a prop bomb.He also pulled his shoulder during the clock scene.
