This was all shot within the Terminal Division of the Boston & Maine. This is incredible footage of their 0-8-0s with booster rods on the tender. Thank you for uploading.

I'll guess the time frame to be late 1920s. The scene of the levermen is, I believe, from inside Tower "D" which governed train movements to and from the Eastern and Western Route Main lines. That tower was eliminated ca. 1929 when the entire Boston freight and passenger terminal was reconfigured and rationalized from the conglomeration of legacy railroads. The centerpiece of this terminal consolidation was the construction of the gravity pneumatic retarder yards in East Somerville. The booster-equipped "H"-class 0-8-0s (road nos. 648 and 649) were unique among B&M switchers in that they were assigned specifically to the hump yard(s) and never really ventured far from there. They are also singularly unique in that they had the distinction of being the ONLY tender-equipped B&M steam locomotives which had "All Weight on Drivers". The freight train shown in the opening scene seemed to have a number of livestock cars in the consist. It is likely that it was destined for the extensive meat processing and packing facilities in Somerville/Cambridge (an area known as the 'Boynton Yards'). If I had to guess, I'd say that scene was shot on the Fitchburg Division out west of Belmont/Waltham somewhere. The livestock movements were "hot" inasmuch as the RR made every effort to deliver the livestock in a sufficiently expeditious fashion so as to avoid having to stop and water the animals. Great stuff! Thank you for posting.

I’m impressed by the knowledge of all these comments. I used to ride the B&M a lot from when I was quite young into adulthood. But I was born in ‘60, so i only remember the Budd cars. Funny thing is, when I saw the scenes at the Somerville yard, I thought it might be that area.

The scenes were taken in and around Boston North station. The Interlocking tower with the "D" telegraphic call code hung outside is the East Somerville/Sullivan Square tower. The big multi-tracked station is Boston North.

Now that is awesome. This was made 8 7 years. Before the Quabbin Reservoir was made. Four towns disappeared in Western Massachusetts the town's names were greenwich, North Dana, Dana and I don't know what the fourth one was but my grandfather helped build it

That was great. My great uncle Percy Russell was a fireman on the Boston and Maine. He held the record for longest employee. Something like 41 years. His locomotive broke a miles record and they won a box of cigars from the boss. Anyway, thanks for putting the great footage out there.

My father and grandfather were both B & M engineers. My grandfather started in 1909 and, he retired in 1958 at 70 years old after 49 years. My dad retired in 1989 after 43 years. The only thing I recognize is North Station and the Garden.
