African Theatres, Limited, introduced the second of their Super Atmospheric Theatres in Pretoria, which is this one we are visiting, but the first one was the Alhambra Theatre in Capetown, which was opened at the end of 1929. Quick facts: Capitol Theatre, construction started on 14 December 1930; Opened by General J.B.M. Hertzog 8 September 1931 with a golden key and 1500 people; 1950 it was discussed to demolish; 1955 the Theatre was sold to Transvaal Province Administration; 1970’s cinemas were starting to be implemented; 1974, 2242 Seats, 14 Statues and projecting equipment was auctioned; 1987 restorations began on the facade of the building and on 17 August 1988 the theatre lived once again for one night only; 1994 the theatre was considered a location for parliament and in December 2007 it was converted into a restaurant and gay nightclub, called Legends. 2010 became a parking lot until today... This used to be the Cinerama. It had a massive screen with 3 projectors showing at the same time. My dad used to be the projectionist.
