When I first saw Broadway Melody of 1936 I was awestruck by Eleanor Powell--I still am. But I find some of her later work slightly marred by that mannerism of throwing her shoulders and head back in that toothy smile.

And now compare Eleanor's artful mastery to the shallow, uninspired and, yes, amateurish dancing and choreography in the - in my opinion - way, way, way over-hyped "La La Land". Worlds apart. Nay, universes apart.

Yes, I hated La La Land.

I wouldn't be too hard on Chazelle for trying to recreate something of the spirit of Golden Age musicals. Anyhow, it is unfair to compare the dancing of today with that of Miss Powell, the kind of talent that turns up once in a couple of centuries.

I sympathize, but I loved the opening sequence, "Another Day of Sun"
