I have never seen my almost 80 year old dad get as teary eyed as he did today when I showed him this video. The very first scene in this video was my dad's house. My dad, his sister and his two brothers are in this video. As well as his father. He remember Mr. and Mrs. Martens very well. Thank you so much for posting this!!

You're welcome! I hope your Dad will get to see the other films of the neighborhood that my Grandfather made over the years. They're all on the playlist titled "Grandpa's Picture Party" that's part of my KZbin channel. My own father, Warren, who also appears in the film as the boy with the new bicycle, passed away in 2012 after a long and fruitful life. Time marches on, but thank heaven we've got the movies to help keep the memories alive.

I believe the man in the white tank top at around 2:22 is my grandfather Ralph Brogna, and my father is also one of the kids parading around on the streets. What a treat to be able to see this. Thank you!

Great to see what CP was like. Only a few of its vestiges remain. Visiting Queens relatives from the Bronx, I often got lost in College Point ( just make that right on 20th Ave. coming off the Whitestone at night to avoid traffic). This was in the 60's. By 1975, I was able to buy a house opposite St. John's and lived there well into the 90's. I always loved it. Thanks for your effort.

Thanks for another great video! I love the dissolve at the end, showing the same scenes as they appear today.

After seeing this movie clip all I kept saying .... "WOW ...my grandpa made UTUBE"! (He's been gone since the early 70's.). Thank you Bob Marten for posting this. I wonder if your dad, would remember him and my dad, Bill (his son)...and my dad's brothers, Bob and Ken and sister, Arlene. Regards, Nancy

@jas22 My father is still hanging in there - he's approaching his mid-80s! He was indeed able to recall many of his playmates when I recently showed him this movie. The girl playing with my father at 4:20 is Jayne Simpson. She appears in quite a few of my grandfather's films. Alas, she passed away in 2007. Thanks for enjoying.

Is Jayne the same as appears in your 1940 follies posting? I take it your family somehow reconnected with her, even if it was after the fact, given that you know she passed in 2007.

All your films are wonderful. Thanks to B&W film stock that they are preserved. Would not be the same if on VHS tapes. The before-and-after dissolve at the end was telling. So many open spaces for the kids to play in, same space now packed with houses. USA population in 1940, 132 million; in 2016, population 324 million. Makes me sad.

Good job on this picture story. I've always wonder what Flushing looked like back then, because I'm working in Flushing now. Do you have any info of the corner of Roosevelt and College Point? What was there????

Cool!!! Which particular house in the movie is the one you're referring to? The one seen at 6:31? My grandparents (Gus and Margaret Martens) lived just a few doors up the hill on the opposite side of the street.

Ragamuffins are alive and well, and have been, in Bay Ridge in Brooklyn since even before Plymouth was a Rock. It's not associated with Thanksgiving, though-- it's actually a variation on Guy Fawkes Day (November 5, when they burn scarecrows in Great Britain, to "remember, remember, the fifth of November!"), only the kids dress as the scarecrows instead (and other costumes nowadays). There's also a Ragamuffin Day in Hoboken NJ and Chappaqua (in Westchester NY), according to Google.
