McCoy’s first recording of his signature tune was also the leadoff track at the very first session credited to Clyde McCoy & his Orchestra. The trumpeter’s more commonly heard Decca remake was recorded in 1935.
CD audio, originally issued on 78rpm: Columbia 2389-D - Sugar Blues (Williams-Fletcher) by Clyde McCoy & his Orchestra, recorded in Chicago January 22, 1931

My WW2 vet dad had a 78 of this that was a Vogue picture record.. It was beautiful and on the flip side was "Basin Street Blues". Coolest thing ever! I was very interested in my dad's collection of 78s, but once I got my first 45 RPM I was hooked! It all started with 3 singles, "Summertime, Summertime" by The Jamies, " Twistin' the Night Away" by Sam Cooke, and "The Wah-Watusi" by The Orlons. But when I discovered Motown I really went bananas!! I'm proud to say I was into Motown before Motown became super-successful. Our local Woolworths in Illinois was selling Motown singles, 3 for a dollar(or two?), singles that are now considered collectors items by Motown fans. This 78 "Sugar Blues" always reminds me of my dad (who lost part of a leg in the war as a medic and received a Purple Heart). Love ya Dad!

My farther introduced me to this before I was 10. I have the 33 1/3. I have tried for years to get my Chinese wife interested in music and opera, country and most classical did nothing. Last night I played this and she exclaimed 'Wow, what's that?'

By far Clyde's best version of this tune. I always listen for the piano solo which is noticably absent from the other versions

Thanks....so glad that you're enjoying the presentation. But in the interest of full disclosure, you'll note in the written description that the audio for this post was sourced from CD, so I can't take credit for the restoration.

Hope you get all the wonderful comments back as people realize where all your music went. Alas, many have probably passed.

By far better than his remakes of his signature song. Found an excellent copy in the late 1990s.
