A much underrated singer, but enormously sort-after at the height of his career. I'm glad that Sam left such a fine catalogue for posterity to discover and enjoy.

Ambrose never disappoints! Wonderful to hear a second "Moonlight Saving Time" today. ... This treatment of "Stop The Sun" is fierce and swinging!
@odietamo93762 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, but oddly, that is why I do not particularly care for this version of “Stop the Sun.” It very much does swing, it’s very danceable, upbeat. But it is actually a very sad song if you think about the lyrics for a moment. That is why I much prefer the version done by The Boswell Sisters, who treat it as such. Very bluesy, almost a dirge. Check it out! The Bozzies were so brilliant.

@@odietamo9376 I'm well acquainted with The Bozzies' "Stop The Sun," which is brilliant. Those girls were great innovators, and always surrounded themselves with the best musicians, particularly the Dorsey Bros.

It's a challenge to find an Ambrose/Sam Browne from this period that is NOT delightful . Sam is said to have made more than 2k recordings with innumerable bands principally in the 1930's decade . Some sort of record ?
@syncopeter5 жыл бұрын
Ambrose' time with HMV must indeed have been his best period. Good as his later Decca sides are, the HMV have that 'extra' that makes them unique. I've never come across a side that I didn't like, I simply bought each and any one I could lay my hands on. And Sam is my favourite vocalist, I personally rank him above Bowlly (please don't kill me for that!).
@phredl5 жыл бұрын
@@syncopeter Hard to compare Bowlly with Browne their styles are so different. Love them both.
@paulkate723 жыл бұрын
@@syncopeter You know your stuff, Peter. However, must disagree with you re Sam vs Al Bowlly (you knew I would!) Sam Browne is a superb 30s vocalist and few are his equal but Al Bowlly - he doesn't have any equals, in my view.
@deejay8303 жыл бұрын
@@syncopeter Sam was such a consummate professional. A documentary was made of him in "Sam Browne remembers" shortly before he died. He came across as completely self effacing and rather humble and he could still sing as well as ever.
@timefortea1931 Жыл бұрын
@@syncopeter I love them both but for me Al had the edge over Sam for his characterful way of interpreting the lyrics and his voice was more powerful and rich. But Sam was very good of course.
