'Tiefland' does NOT show Riefenstahl's love for the Roma - Riefenstahl took Roma prisoners from the concentration camps for free work in her film before sending them back there to die after. It's pretty clear if you read about her that she was not just an incredible, innocent artist whose work happened to be interpreted as propaganda. Olympia was secretly funded by the Nazis, Victory of the Faith was entirely funded by them, and watching them and Triumph of the Will, it's pretty difficult to argue that they aren't glorifying the Nazis as a powerful piece of their propaganda would. I'm not saying she was another Goebbels, she's far more complex than that, but Leni Riefenstahl shouldn't be thought of as a victim of circumstance and her work shouldn't be admired outside of the historical context she took advantage of when creating it. theguardian.com/world/2002/aug/18/artsandhumanities.germany www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/01439680500533375?scroll=top&needAccess=true& encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/leni-riefenstahl

That's why her career ended with the end of Nazi Germany.

@Andrew McGinn: You're right. The issue is rather complex, but her claims that the Roma extras all survived and several had later claimed that they had the time of their life on set are not a good representation of the sad truth. The fact that she turned the protagonist lead character into a noble gypsy may still show some exoticistic love for the Roma culture, but other characters apparently display negative stereotyped traits. The original description for this video was probably written after watching one of her interviews and has now been changed to better reflect the complexity of her status.

Here bc of Susan Sontag's essay "Fascinating Fascism," highly recommended - especially for fanboys who like propaganda films "just for aesthetic reasons" ... Dang these comments are like - "rest in peace u so beautiful nazi lady," "historical ... thus beyond criticism" etc yeesh

Way overated, very artificial and stiff.

How can it be overrated when it was made in 1932? Certainly its historic interest outweighs any conventional criticism. So, "stiff" for 1932, I guess. King Kong was 1933--a classic but maybe also "artificial and stiff."
