I guess to each his own ,but kindig is an award winning self-taught car builder . Just as Bob is self-taught and he builds some damn cool cars, I enjoy what he builds as much as I do kindig's. I look forward to watching Bob work through the challenges that lay ahead with project rats' nest. 🐀 . You'll get it you just ain't got it yet.

Every man who builds cars has his place. I admire Bob for his simple style that lets a lot of us fit in an affordable spot. Don't knock the Kindigs, Foose, Ian and others who spend the time to make beautiful cars and trucks. I have customized many cars always striving to make the next one better than the first.

Hello Bob I live in the Great State of Maine. I'm a third generation of boat builders. I have built fiberglass boats all of my life to lobster fish in. To answer your question about heating fiberglass ( No) it will not bend at all you will just set it on fire Your best wat is to make relift cuts in the glass and then reglass the cuts .

There is so much to know about fiberglass. Wish I was there to give you some tips, maybe we could chat some time. One of the first things is to make some sort of steel frame to mount your parts to. From there it is fairly straight forwards. Looking forward to the project.

I like the idea of gasser type spokes on the front. You could spindle mount them and re-arch the front spring to get a nose high gasser stance. There are two types of fiberglass resin. Use the epoxy type as it is stronger. To help hold the shape of the tops of the doors you could bend up a steel tube to be the middle of the structure. Glue this to the bottoms of the doors and cut and paste the top pieces. Then fill in the gaps with resin and glass fibers. It's going to be messy and itchy so wear gloves and apply baby powder. This should be interesting. Set the engine back and build a cover out of aluminum sheet. The suicide doors of the '34 open the correct way for access. A 6 point roll bar for safety with you sitting near the rear axle complete the street gasser look. Interior should be aluminum sheet as your last car worked out well and this one will too. Lots of episodes to come. I'm along for the ride.

I have some experience in fiberglass, but far from a pro.. but I did deal with body fitment issues on a 73 corvette once. The car had had front and rear collision damage and the guy that did the initial repair slapped it together half ass using parts from about or 4 different years. A friend that had bought the car for a song begged me to have a Crack at it. I found if I made radius cuts in the fiberglass and found ways to clamp/brace it in place then reglassed the cuts, it would stay in place. I used mat and cloth with resin on the back of the panel and chopped mat mixed into duraglass for the outside exposed cuts. This is one of those things where you step back, look at it, then feel it, and use your best judgment.

Hey Bob, remember that the fiberglass you have is cured. This means that there is a layer that contains wax. Fiberglass will nut bond to a waxed surface. Your best chance is to sand down about 1/16 and really wipe it good with acetone before and after, then pray to the fiberglass gods ! Also I would stagger your joints so when you bond the inner and outer door together that there isn't a common seam. You need to get unwaxed resin for your primary layups and finish with waxed resin on the final layer so everything will cure. Best of luck !!
@RatRodBobBuilds
@RatRodBobBuilds 4 ай бұрын
Thanks brother. I've got some laminating resin and matt on the way along with a bunch of other tools and stuff to make it happen and I also have some waxed resin on the shelf. I plan on doing just that ... grind it down a lot and build it back up from both sides and also drill some holes in the waxed stuff to give the new stuff something to hold on to. May end up a little thicker but that should be better as long as I can get the door to shut flush with a rubber weatherstrip in the door jams. Good tip on staggering the joints on the inner and outer door parts.

Hi Bob, that big block C6 has a huge bellhousing. They make a small block C6, it has the same internals but a smaller case which means more room for the driver. You would need to make an adapter but that's not a high price to pay for more foot room if that becomes a problem.@@RatRodBobBuilds

Heat will only shrink the resin and not the fiberglass. It might move 1/16 of an inch. You will need to relieve cut and refiberglass Bob. Get some Duraglss and Kitty hair, a full face respirator and tyveck coveralls and a box or latex gloves. I could fiberglass boats. That going to be a sweet one Bob. Can't wait to see it done. If you need any advice feel free to reach out about fiberglass. My dad was a cistom car builder and worked with George Barris and helped buld/ Paint the Munsters Mobile and the Pink panther Cars and a few others. So I learned at an early age from one of the best in the biz.

The couple of glass cars I built the lack of door handles and weatherstripping issues drove me bonkers. I made some linkage and added door handles to my Vicky cuz I hate door poppers. Luckily you're way schmarter than me. Fiberglass is tuff, no bending, only cutting and reglassing to reshape. Wear a mask with ALL cutting, sanding and grinding, but you prolly knew that. The 34's are super cool cars.

When bonding fiberglass use a small sandblaster it will expose some of the small fibers to bond to, gets in small areas, is very fast, leaves a good surface to bond to, a grinder will cut all fibers and melt polyester. On the backside it is quite efficient getting in small areas. Mixing steel and fiberglass may be a good option considering the heat and span of the hood panels.

@RatRodBobBuilds no problem! Epoxy doesn't add any extra strength. Pink foam and packing tape make great molds. You can get fiberglass and resin at your local hardware store for doing boat repairs. Mat fiberglass adds a lot of thickness but you should go over mat with cloth for a nice finish. Chip brushes are great for epoxy and they are cheap. Dab the resin on. Don't brush.

I grew up listening to country music. Bobby Gentry sang a song about a town called Tupelo Mississippi. I do believe that afore I went to Nam, that song was all about a couple having some kinds of real bad troubles. Seems as tho they had tossed their baby off of the bridge into the water where that baby was lost forever more..... it went like "And me and Billy Joe McAlister" was seen tossing the baby off of the bridge .... Yep, times a being what they was.... damn serious business... found myself a tear in the corner of my eyes...... just a little leaky spot. I never tried fiberglass on anything but one of my big trucks and that was to fix the hood where it cracked and was going to split in half. Now I would of guessed that you would be building some mounts for the body to frame. I understand the reason for stability and doors are a good part of it on a rig with no floors in it. I figure as a guess that you will make those floors out of metal and allow it to mount it easier to the frame. Making molds for a floor out of fiberglass would be right down expensive. What bit of time I spent making that hood solid enough so it could tilt.. it was a factory tilt hood, theres that, fiberglass just is hard to make it stay put and the glass fibers are some kind of kill you stuff. So no way would I undertake your project myself. I know your gonna do it and it will be just fine. Good luck on it Bob. I would say more about me but my doctor visit today is just another way of the government wants us all dead as we don't pay into their taxes and such.... their saying no on costs of my medication and it wasn't ever like that before. Our medication comes from china an has no oversight on quality control. Its just garbage stuff and comes out of mexico. I am in more pain every day, and sometimes just wonder why...... WHY BOB? Why can they do that to any old people.
